On this day in 1896, Bridget Driscoll was walking in Crystal Palace park with her family when she became the first pedestrian killed in a motor collision.
At the inquest into her death, the coroner said he hoped such a tragedy "would never happen again", and yet since then over 500,000 people have been killed on UK roads.
It is time to challenge the complacent attitude towards road death we as a country have adopted, and work towards safe transport for all.
