🏁🚗 This project was thrilling right up to the finish line!

Scalextric cars might look simple from the outside, but there’s a surprising amount of engineering packed into every lap.

Performance, durability, manufacturability, consistency. All of it matters, especially when products are being produced at scale.

Because mass-market products don’t just need to work once. They need to work thousands of times, in thousands of homes, after being crashed into skirting boards and launched off dining room tables. Probably repeatedly.

That’s the challenge with consumer product engineering. Balancing fun, cost, reliability, and production realities all at the same time.

What product do you regularly use that is far more sophisticated than most people realise?

I’ll go first: a retractable tape measure.

It seems simple on the surface.

But inside, there is spring tension, blade stiffness, locking mechanisms, material selection, durability testing, ergonomics, manufacturing tolerances and years of refinement to make it feel reliable in your hand.

Good engineering often looks obvious That’s usually the point.

Most people never get to see the engineering that goes into ensuring drugs are delivered safely.

That reliability is the result of careful engineering, testing and validation Medical systems should be predictable, simple and dependable for the people using them.

Achieving that level of trust requires a great deal of detailed engineering behind the scenes. This hidden complexity is what enables medical products to work consistently.

Creating a prototype to prove the idea is only the beginning.

One of the biggest misconceptions in product development is the assumption that creating a working prototype means that the hard part is over.

Often, the real engineering begins afterwards:
Can it be assembled repeatedly?
Can it survive transport?
Can it be manufactured consistently?

Mass-market products quickly expose weaknesses. Good engineering earns its value through reliability at scale.

The bicycle is a great example of how great product design can be surprisingly simple. 🚲

No screens.
No apps.
No unnecessary complexity.

Instead, it has decades of engineering refinement to balance weight, strength, comfort, aerodynamics, manufacturability and reliability.

Every angle, material and component has a purpose.

Good design usually feels effortless to the person using it. That’s what makes it good.

Here's a product design tip!

One simple way to improve a product at an early stage is to consider how it will be assembled. Consider not just whether it can be assembled, but also how easy it is to do so repeatedly and correctly.

Are the parts easy to align? Are the fixings accessible? Can components only be assembled one way, or is there room for error?

Small decisions here can have a significant impact later on. On build time, consistency and overall reliability.

It’s much easier to address these issues during the design stage than once production has started.

It’s not the easiest environment in which to work at the moment.

Budgets are tighter. Timelines are shorter. Expectations haven’t really changed and we see this across many of the projects we’re involved in.

So, it feels like a good time to say thank you. Thank you to the clients we work with and the teams we work alongside.

A lot of effort goes into keeping projects moving forward, especially when things aren’t straightforward. This doesn't go unnoticed.

We appreciate the trust placed in us, and the way people continue to approach the work, even when it’s challenging.
