CORE TEST SKILL AND MANOEUVRES
Lane Discipline: A Small Skill That Makes a Big Difference

Good lane discipline keeps traffic flowing smoothly and makes every journey safer - especially on roundabouts, dual carriageways, and busy multi‑lane roads. When you hold a steady, predictable position, other drivers instantly understand what you intend to do.

Poor lane discipline can cause hesitation, last‑minute swerves, and confusion for the drivers around you. That’s when mistakes and near‑misses happen.

Strong lane discipline starts with early planning:
1. Look well ahead and read signs in good time
2. Use road markings to choose the correct lane early
3. Avoid drifting or last second lane changes

Before moving lanes, always use mirror → signal → manoeuvre and only change your position when it is safe to do so. Checking your blind spot just before you move over into another lane is important.

Clear, confident lane positioning shows awareness, forward planning, and control - exactly what the examiners are looking for on your test day!

Following Distance

Maintaining a safe following distance gives you more time to react to hazards and shows good awareness of what’s happening ahead. Driving too close reduces your ability to stop safely if traffic suddenly slows.

Use the two-second rule in dry conditions and increase this gap when the road is wet, icy, or busy. This simple habit greatly reduces the risk of collisions and helps create smoother journeys.

⭐ The Core Rule: The 2‑Second Rule

This is the standard safe‑following guideline in the UK for dry, clear conditions.
🚗 Pick a fixed point ahead (a sign, tree, lamp post).
🚗 When the vehicle in front passes it, say to yourself:
“Only a fool breaks the two‑second rule.”
🚗 If you reach the fixed point before you finish saying it, you’re too close!

Why it works
🚗 It adjusts automatically with speed.
🚗 It’s based on time, not metres, so it works whether you are travelling at 20 mph or 70 mph.

⭐️🚗 FIRST TIME PASS 🚙⭐️

Congratulations 🥳🍾🥂🎉 to Jacob Shepherd who made it a ‘hat trick’ of first time passes in the last 5 days for MRW Driving!

Jacob passed his test at Brookmount Court in Cambridge on Monday 18 May with only 3 driving faults.

Like many students taking their driving test, the hardest part for Jacob was getting over his anxiety and nerves.

You have been a model student during your lessons. Now it is time to start believing in your own ability. Stay safe on the roads, keep learning every time you get behind the wheel and enjoy your new found freedom and independence!

Well done, Jacob. You have worked hard for this. Thank you to Mum too for the extra help that she gave you!

Thank you for choosing MRW Driving! 🚗💨

⭐️🚗 FIRST TIME PASS 🚙⭐️

Congratulations 🥳🍾🥂🎉 to Ethan Watters who passed his driving test in Cambridge on Thursday 14 May 2026 with a first time pass and only 2 driving faults!

Anyone who knows Ethan, ask him about his driving test the next time you see him! I don’t want to embarrass him too much but I sat in the back of the car for the test. I saw parts of Cambridge that I have never seen before (oops, wrong way!) and I had a full tour of the Histon roundabout (2 tours of it actually! Oops, wrong way again!)

Ethan, you have been an absolute pleasure to teach as a student. You always listened well to the feedback that you were given. Stay safe on the road, keep learning every time you get behind the wheel and enjoy your new found independence and freedom.

Thank you for choosing MRW Driving! 🚗💨

⭐️🚗 FIRST TIME PASS 🚙⭐️

Congratulations 🥳🥂🍾🎉 to Callum Metcalfe who passed his driving test in Bury St Edmunds on Wednesday 13 May 2026 on his first attempt.

If you see a car driving around Soham in the next couple of weeks and it appears to be flashing its headlights at you, don’t worry, it is probably Callum trying to work out how to put his windscreen wipers on! 😂🤣

On his pre-test lesson, I asked Callum to show me how he would turn his headlights onto dipped beam.
Callum: “You have shown me how to do this before”
Me: “Yes, Callum, at least half a dozen times!”

I have really enjoyed having you as a student. The help that you have had from Mum with your driving should not be underestimated. Stay safe on the roads, keep learning every time you get behind the wheel and enjoy your new found independence and freedom.

You now have the bragging rights (for life) over your brother and sister! Well done, Callum, with your well-deserved first time pass!

Thank you for choosing MRW Driving! 🚗💨

Steering Control

Good steering is about smooth, controlled movements rather than quick or harsh turns of the wheel. Keeping both hands on the wheel gives you better control and helps maintain stability, especially at lower speeds.

Using correct steering techniques will improve accuracy during manoeuvres such as parking and turning at junctions. With practice, steering becomes more natural, making every day driving feel calmer and more relaxed.

Steering never looked that difficult when you watched your Mum and Dad driving their cars! Once you get behind the wheel and try it for yourself, it isn't as easy as you think! The more you practice, the better your steering will become and the 'over steer' and 'under steer' that your instructor keeps going on about will soon be a thing of the past!

CORE TEST SKILLS AND MANOEUVRES
Reverse Bay Parking

Reverse bay parking allows you to drive out of the space safely and with better visibility, which is why it’s often the preferred method used by more experienced drivers. It’s a manoeuvre that rewards patience and good observation rather than speed.

Use clear reference points to help with your steering and keep the car moving slowly. Check mirrors and blind spots regularly and be prepared to pause if someone walks behind the car. Small adjustments are allowed, so don’t panic if it isn’t perfect first time - safe corrections show good control.

Students often find it easier to reverse into a bay rather than drive forward into one. This is because there are more things to assist with the manoeuvre. Modern day cars are often fitted with reversing cameras, but you still need to be checking your mirrors regularly. Do not get fixated on the reversing camera, simply use it as an aid to perfect your positioning!

Why Do I Do These Crazy Things?!

Last night (Tuesday 28 April) I completely ruptured my Achilles whilst playing badminton! 🏸

I am just waiting to see the consultant. The good news is that the gap is only a few millimetres, so it may fuse back together without surgery. The bad news is that I could have this boot on for 12 weeks! Not the best of news for a driving instructor, especially with it being my clutch foot!
I will know more once I have spoken to the consultant. Watch this space!

CORE TEST SKILLS AND MANOEUVRES
Speed Awareness

Driving at an appropriate speed is just as important as staying within the speed limit. Safe speed depends on several factors including road conditions, traffic levels, weather, and visibility – not just the number shown on the sign!

During the driving test, examiners also look for something called “making progress.” This means driving at a speed that is safe but also keeps up with the normal flow of traffic when conditions allow. Driving significantly below the speed limit without a good reason can hold up other road users and may be marked as a fault.

At the same time, good drivers know when to slow down. Approaching junctions, bends, parked vehicles, or busy pedestrian areas often requires reducing speed and preparing for possible hazards. Learning to balance safe speed with confident progress is a key skill that helps drivers stay safe while keeping traffic moving smoothly.
