When a balancing machine says ‘that’ll do’ - but physics says otherwise.

This wheel arrived with 14 separate 5 g weights, some of them literally counter balancing each other.

An example of a machine‑led balance all fitted on the disc side.

With a new tyre it was then correctly balanced with 25 g of weights in one position, on the opposite side to the disc. The wheel was too rough and rounded in the centre to attach the weights.

Why we don’t repair most motorcycle tyres

Most performance motorcycle tyres use steel‑belted radial construction. As shown in the photo, to repair a puncture, the tyre has to be drilled or reamed, which cuts through the steel cords inside the tyre. These cords are essential for controlling tyre growth and stability, especially at high speed and when cornering.

Once the cords are cut, the tyre can no longer perform as designed. At speed, the damaged area can grow and repairs have been known to loosen or fail. For this reason, the manufacturers we deal with do not approve repairs to most high‑performance motorcycle tyres and often recommend replacement instead. Even some manufacturers clearly advise against tyre repair on the side wall of their tyres.

Michelin are a notable exception. Many Michelin motorcycle tyres use aramid (Kevlar‑type) fibre reinforcement rather than steel belts, which is more tolerant of localised damage. Michelin allow repairs only in specific cases, limited to the centre of the tread and carried out using a professional internal mushroom repair after full inspection.

Even where a repair is permitted, the tyre’s original performance and speed rating cannot be guaranteed. Riders using a repaired tyre should avoid sustained high‑speed riding, including track use or unrestricted roads such as the Autobahn.
