Here is a nice note sent to us by Kevin Lepoidevin - Global Solo Challenge entrant.
"In preparation for my 26000nm single-handed, non-stop and unassisted circumnavigation in the 2023/24 Global Solo Challenge, I wanted to support the smaller sole owner operator of reputable businesses that had quality products. I am just an ordinary working guy (read not rich) looking for quality, low risk and value for money solutions; something learned over a lifetime in the Defence aviation industry.
Jim is highly respected in the watermaker game, so it was only natural Jim was on the top of my consultation shortlist. After a brief chat it was clear he knew his stuff. Jim had recently collaborated with Nautilus Watermakers to develop a modular 12vdc driven watermaker called the Water Baby, producing 15lph for only 15amps. Power that could easily be replaced by my hydrogenator.
Jim’s personal approach and ‘old school’ customer service was a breathe of fresh air in a world driven by large corporations where customers are treated like numbers and sales folk are focused on sales commissions, not the customer. Having established my operating environment and minimum requirements, Jim set to work putting together a kit with adequate spares to cover just about any contingency, enabling on-water repair without any outside assistance in accordance with the Global Solo Challenge Regulations. The Nautilus Water Baby is modular so I could install the system where I could easily access components for maintenance in a seaway, but positioned to be protected from damage in the event of a knockdown. I made a simple wooden enclosure to protect the system, rather than hide it inside a locker.
Performance from day one until the end of my journey was exceptional. The system performed to specification and provided all my freshwater needs, including topping up my portable 10 litre deck shower. The High Pressure pump is very quiet as I also mounted it on Polyflex general purpose mounts as a preventative measure given my destination was the Southern Ocean. Throughout the 13000nm I covered before retiring from the GSC due to time constraints in rounding Cape Horn, the Water Baby performed as designed. Containing no proprietary parts, you can be assured of obtaining parts anywhere in the world, and Jim is but a phone call away to help you on your way.
Having the Nautilus Water Baby onboard will make for a very comfortable Melbourne to Osaka Japan race in Mar 2025.
Thanks Jim!"
