45 years as a Mercedes specialist and still we haven't seen everything.....
We spent some time puzzling over what could have caused this green silicone to block the fuel divider inlet. We checked the pump and the tank and found nothing wrong.
We do now know where it came from and we'll post more about it in due course but in the meantime let's have your comments as to where you think it came from. Update:
Anyone reading the comments will see that this is indeed a global problem with aftermarket fuel filters. In our case it was a Bosch filter but it would appear that the problem is not unique to Bosch with the further implication that a single manufacturer is supplying multiple aftermarket brands with the same inferior product.
