Why a Puncture Costs Construction Plant More Than a New Tyre
A flat tyre on a telehandler, dumper or wheeled loader stops the pour, the lift or the haul cycle. The tyre itself is the cheap part. The idle crew, the standing plant hire clock and the delayed next job are not. Downtime compounds. Moving the machine to a safe position, waiting for a fitter, fitting a replacement and resuming work can consume half a shift for what looked like a five-minute repair. Punctures seldom happen conveniently. They cluster around demolition debris, stripped fixings, scaffold clips, flints, rebar offcuts and damaged pallets on access routes and hardstandings. Repeat failures shorten tyre life. Running underinflated between checks accelerates shoulder and sidewall damage, pushing otherwise serviceable tyres into early replacement. For plant hire, the cost extends beyond the repair: late delivery, contractual penalties and reputational damage when equipment is not where the customer expects it. The metric that matters is not cost per tyre but cost per working hour.
