Hillman Minx Mk.VII 1954 - Poole, UK

Hillman Minx Mk.VII 1954 - Poole, UK 1954 Hillman Minx. Mk. VII restoration project. Car has been in family for around 50 years, and we are hoping to have it looking great in the near future.

Having been in the family for around 50 years, this Hillman Minx Mk.VII has spent many years stored away in a garage gathering dust, going rusty and breaking. Until now. Now we have began a restoration project which involves a lot of fettling, cleaning and whacking stuff. The car now runs and works, but there is still a lot of cosmetic work that needs doing. We are now at the stage of being able t

o take the car out to shows in the South West of England, and share this great, rare car with other enthusiasts.

Time for some more nostalgia.
photo's taken inside and at the rear of Warn & Co Garage in Seldown Road Poole, where my farther was a Partner.

The young boy is me ! I think the photo was taken in 1966, soon after dad got the car.

The inside photo taken around 1976, just before the workshop was demolished in order to build the Poole arts Centre.

Weather permitting and if all goes well, we plan to be at the Classics on the Prom event in Bournemouth on Sunday 13th March between 11am - 2pm.
The event takes place on the prom behind the BIC, close to the pier and beach. This will be our first public display since the exterior restoration, its well worth taking a look.

Apologies for not updating the site for some time. This is due to our Minx being away having a full exterior restoration. She is now back home and looking great.

A great deal of rust was found and cut out resulting in a lot of new metal being fabricated and welded into place. This process also replaced a lot of body filler that was used in previous attempts to make good.

The 68-year-old cellulose paint was also looking sad, flat, and pitted. Some of the panels had been blown in with previous repairs resulting in colour inconsistently in aeras.

The chrome trim was also not looking its best, so while everything was taken off, we also had that restored.

Hopefully we have resolved the overheating issue with a new radiator that matches the original one. The old one was found to be bunged up. The water was only going around the sides and not through the vanes, so not being cooled by the fan as much as it should have been. Driving it back home the temperature gauge was lower than I ever remember.

Other replacements include new front side lights, water and ventilator hoses, and tyres. Some of the old wiring was not in good condition, and that has also been replaced.

Wheel arches and the underneath has had rust and anti-corrosion treatment to help keep it all good for the next 70 years!

We will post some photos of the restoration being carried out, but for the time being this is the result of the hard work. Hope you like it!

First drive of the year today - exciting stuff! A few challenges, though. Lots of stalling, and the temperature needle ended up off the scale! Pictured here is what we found; eyuck! This will need a clean, but a fresh top up and the tires back up to pressure; we are (hopefully) going to be alright for the summer! ☀️

Here are a couple of good old photos we found yesterday.

Now that summer is upon us, we are hoping to be on the road regularly once again!

Even though the Hillman hasn't been started in many months, a few cranks of the starter handle and a blast on the starter motor; it fired up almost immediately (after we had charged the battery, of course).

This is a promising sign!

We are now in the process of cleaning the Hillman's path to the road by building a new shed to try and de-clutter its garage, and rehome some of the stuff on the driveway that blocks its path.

We look forward to another summer of successful journeys and continued restoration of the Hillman. Let the adventures begin!
