Ever feel like the road suddenly gives you no time to think?

Sometimes the problem isn’t your reactions — it’s where you’re looking.

When you’re learning, it’s easy to concentrate on the bit of road immediately in front of the bonnet.

But looking further ahead gives you more time to spot what’s developing.

A pedestrian near a crossing.
Brake lights ahead.
A parked car narrowing the road.
A junction coming up.
A change in the speed limit.

The earlier you notice something, the more time you have to plan rather than panic.

Of course, you still need to stay aware of what’s happening close to the car too. Good observation is about taking in the whole driving environment, not staring at one spot.

A little reminder for your next lesson:

Eyes up. Look ahead. Give yourself time.

Learners — do you ever catch yourself staring at the road just in front of the car?

Save this one for your next lesson.

Firstly — I’m not going to hand you the keys and immediately send you onto the busiest road in Peterborough!

Your first lesson is about you.

We’ll chat about any previous experience you’ve had, get you comfortable in the driver’s seat and start working through the basics at a pace that suits you.

Depending on your experience, that might include:

✓ Getting your driving position set up
✓ Understanding the main controls
✓ Mirrors and observations
✓ Starting and stopping the car
✓ Your first bit of clutch control

And if we don’t get through all of that?

That’s absolutely fine.

There’s no prize for rushing through your first lesson.

Practising driving with your teenager? One thing they need from you more than anything else is… calm.

Private practice can be really useful alongside professional driving lessons, but swapping the passenger seat for the parent passenger seat isn’t always easy. 😅

If you’re helping your teenager practise, try these:

Give instructions early.
“Turn left NOW!” isn’t particularly helpful when they’re already at the junction.

Let them think.
They need opportunities to read the road and make decisions rather than relying on somebody constantly telling them what to do.

Keep mistakes in perspective.
If something doesn’t go quite right, find somewhere safe to stop and talk it through calmly.

Don’t introduce five corrections at once.
Pick the important point, work on it and move on.

And one of my favourites…

Try not to teach them differently from their driving lessons.

If you’re unsure why they’ve been taught to do something a particular way, ask them about it rather than immediately changing it.

Learning to drive can already feel like a lot to process.

A calm passenger can make a huge difference.

Parents — what’s the hardest part of sitting in the passenger seat while your teenager practises?

I’d genuinely love to hear your answers below.

Nervous about learning to drive? You don’t need to pretend you’re not.

Some learners get into the driver’s seat absolutely buzzing to get started.

Others are thinking…

“What if I stall?”
“What if I hold everyone up?”
“What if I make a mistake?”
“What if I’m just terrible at this?”

And that’s completely OK.

My lessons aren’t about expecting you to know everything before you’ve learnt it.

We’ll work at a pace that helps you understand why you’re doing something, practise it and gradually build your confidence behind the wheel.

Made a mistake? We’ll work through it.

Stalled? We’ll sort it.

Need to practise something again? We’ll practise it again.

Whether you’re starting from scratch, feeling nervous about learning, or coming back to driving after some time away, you’re welcome.

I offer manual driving lessons, intensive courses, refresher lessons, nervous-driver support and motorway lessons in and around Peterborough.

If you’d like to talk about lessons, send me a message and tell me a little about where you are with your driving.

No pressure — just a chat about what you need.

Clutch control feeling more like a battle than a skill at the moment? 😅

You’re definitely not the only learner who’s had that “WHY did it stall again?!” moment.

One thing that can help is remembering that the clutch isn’t simply ON or OFF.

When moving away, you’re learning to feel where the clutch starts to engage — the biting point — and then coordinate your feet smoothly as the car begins to move.

The key word is smoothly.

Rushing your left foot up can make the car jerk or stall. Holding the clutch unnecessarily can cause excessive wear.

And don’t become obsessed with staring at the rev counter either. Part of learning a manual car is developing a feel for what the car is doing through its sound and movement.

It can feel like there are about 47 things happening at once when you first start. 😂

With practice, those separate little actions gradually become one smooth routine.

Learners — what caused you more grief at the beginning: clutch control or changing gear?

Parked cars. Oncoming traffic. Not quite enough room for both of you… what do you do? 👀

Meeting traffic on a narrow road can feel awkward when you’re learning, especially when another driver seems determined to keep coming!

A few things to remember:

🚗 Look well ahead. Spot parked vehicles and approaching traffic early so you’ve got time to plan.

↔️ Work out where you can safely pass. Don’t squeeze through a gap just because you think the car might fit.

⚠️ If the obstruction is on your side, you may need to give way to oncoming traffic.

👀 Keep checking around you. Watch for pedestrians, cyclists, doors opening and vehicles pulling away.

Most importantly, don’t let an impatient driver pressure you into a gap you’re not comfortable with.

Sometimes the safest decision really is simply to wait.

Learners: what do you find trickiest — judging the gap or knowing when to wait?

Tell me below.
