Another good read, especially in our area.
AWARENESS | Horses on Our Roads
Lighter evenings. Warmer weather.
You will start seeing more horses and riders out on the roads again.
This is where your driving has to change.
A horse is not predictable.
It is not a vehicle.
It is a powerful animal that can react in seconds if startled.
When you see a horse:
๐ Slow right down or Stop.
๐ No revving. No horn. No sudden movements
๐ Pass wide and slow. At least two metres
๐ Move away gently once you are clear
There is more to it than just passing.
๐ Be ready to stop completely if needed
๐ Pay attention to the rider. If they signal you to slow or stop, do it
๐ If they are turning, wait. Do not try to squeeze past
๐ If the horse looks tense or unsettled, stop and switch off your engine
๐ Do not move again until the horse is well clear
If you are behind them:
๐ Hold back and give space
๐ Do not pressure them
๐ Only pass when it is clearly safe
On narrow roads:
๐ Treat it like meeting another vehicle
๐ If there is not enough room, wait
๐ Sometimes you may need to reverse to create space
Remember:
๐ Riders cannot always thank you. Their control comes first
๐ A small nod is often all they can safely manage
๐ Warning signs are there for a reason
In places like the New Forest, Exmoor and Dartmoor, you may also encounter free roaming ponies.
Treat them with the same care.
Patience prevents panic.
Space prevents tragedy.
Drive like they are around the next bend.
Because often, they are.
