πŸ“’ The rules for booking a practical car driving test are changing.

From 31 March 2026, learner drivers and approved driving instructors (ADIs) will only be able to change a driving test booking up to 2 times.

A change includes:
- changing the date or time
- changing the test centre
- swapping an appointment with another learner

If you’re an ADI, please make sure your pupils only book their test when they’re ready as swapping between pupils will count towards this limit. You can set times when you're available to take your pupils to their driving tests. This stops your pupils from booking tests at times that do not work for you.

πŸ‘‰ When this comes into force, everyone with a driving test booked will have 2 changes available, regardless of how many changes they may have already made.

This change is part of the outcome of our consultation to improve the way driving tests are booked.

What Actually Caused Crashes on UK Roads in 2025

Every time there is a serious collision, the same questions appear.
Was it the road.
Was it the car.
Was it bad luck.

The provisional UK data for 2025 tells a much clearer story.

What the latest UK figures show

According to provisional data published by the Department for Transport for the year ending June 2025:

πŸ˜” Around 127,000 casualties were reported on UK roads
πŸ˜” Around 1,570 people were killed
πŸ˜” Nearly 30,000 people were killed or seriously injured

These figures are slightly lower than the previous year, but the pattern behind them has not changed.

The most common cause is still human behaviour

The leading contributing factor in UK road collisions is not road condition.
It is not vehicle failure.
It is not weather.

It is human error and behaviour.

This includes
πŸ›‘ Failing to look properly
πŸ›‘ Misjudging speed or distance
πŸ›‘ Pulling out when it is not safe
πŸ›‘ Following the vehicle in front instead of making your own decision
πŸ›‘ Assuming instead of observing

Most crashes are not dramatic.
They are small mistakes that happen quickly

Speed is not always about breaking the limit

Many serious collisions involve vehicles travelling within the speed limit.

The issue is often inappropriate speed for the conditions.
Corners.
Rural roads.
Wet surfaces.
Reduced visibility.

Speed becomes dangerous when it removes time to react.

Urban roads vs rural roads
Urban roads see more collisions overall because of traffic volume and complexity.

Rural roads account for a higher proportion of fatal crashes.

Higher speeds.
Narrower roads.
Limited escape routes.
Less margin for error.

Distraction remains a major factor
Mobile phones.
Sat navs.
Passengers.
Fatigue.

Looking away for seconds is enough to change outcomes permanently.

β€œI didn’t see them” is one of the most common phrases recorded after collisions.

Vulnerable road users
Pedestrians.
Cyclists.
Motorcyclists.

They are disproportionately represented in serious and fatal collisions because they have no protection when something goes wrong.

The hierarchy of road users exists for a reason.

What this tells us:
Most crashes are not caused by recklessness.
They are caused by normal people making small mistakes.

Driving is not dangerous because people are bad.
It is dangerous because people are human.

This is why observation matters more than confidence.
This is why patience matters more than progress.
This is why being β€œin the right” does not keep you safe.

The roads do not punish mistakes.
They simply allow them to play out.

Drive like every decision matters because it does.

If you find yourself driving through fog this winter, remember:

🌫️ Use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced – and use fog lights when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet), but switch them off when visibility improves

🌫️ Keep a safe distance behind the vehicle in front

🌫️ Check your speed – make sure you can stop well within the distance you can see clearly

🌫️ Use your windscreen wipers and demisters

Remember: If β€˜fog’ is shown on a sign but the road is clear, be prepared for a bank of fog or drifting patchy fog ahead. Even if it seems to be clearing, you can suddenly find yourself in thick fog.

🚦 ROUNDABOUTS: WHY THEY EXIST AND WHY THEY GO WRONG 🚦

People complain about roundabouts all the time.

β€œToo many lanes.”
β€œToo confusing.”
β€œWhy cannot we just have traffic lights?”

But roundabouts were created for one reason:
To make junctions safer and smoother.

βœ”οΈ You do not sit at a red light when there is no one coming
βœ”οΈ Traffic keeps moving
βœ”οΈ Crashes are usually low-speed, not life-ending

But here is the problem…

A roundabout only works if everyone plays their part.

❌ If you do not signal
❌ If you pick a random lane
❌ If you drift across markings
❌ If you hesitate in the wrong place

…then nobody knows what you are doing.
Confusion becomes chaos.
And suddenly the safest junction becomes one of the most stressful.

πŸ’‘ Roundabouts rely on communication
Signalling is not optional.
Lane choice is not a guess.
Your position tells the story of where you intend to go.

If drivers cannot read your plan
they cannot slow down, hold back, or react safely.

So yes
Roundabouts are brilliant
But only when drivers are too

The rules are simple:

πŸ‘‰ Look early
πŸ‘‰ Choose the correct lane
πŸ‘‰ Signal to help others understand your move
πŸ‘‰ Keep a steady flow when safe

Roundabouts protect lives.
Do your part to make them work.

Stay Safe 🫢🏾

We have published the full report for the consultation on improving the rules for booking a driving test.

The outcome of the consultation means that:
- only learner drivers will be able to book and manage car driving tests
- learner drivers will be limited to making up to 2 changes to their test in total
- tests will only be able to be moved to driving test centres within a certain geographical area of the original booking

These changes will be introduced from spring 2026.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond to the consultation.

πŸš— PASSED BUT NOT READY

βœ‹ Let’s talk about something uncomfortable.

Far too many people think instructors are only after their money.
They roll their eyes when told they are not ready.
They think lessons are being dragged out for profit.
What they do not see are the stories behind those words.

We have seen what happens when someone rushes to take the test before they are truly ready.
We have seen overconfidence turn into tragedy.
We have seen the quiet ones, the nervous ones, the β€œI will be fine” ones who go out alone and never come home.

We do not say β€œyou are not ready” to control anyone.
We say it after years of watching what impatience can cause.
We say it after seeing flowers tied to lampposts and cars wrapped around trees.
We say it after hearing the silence that follows a family being told their child will not return.

The truth is that many can pass a driving test without being safe.
Ticking boxes does not prepare anyone for the realities of the road.
There is no examiner when you are driving in the rain, when headlights glare, or when a friend distracts you.
A certificate shows the minimum standard met.
It does not mean you are equipped to handle what life will throw at you.

Parents must stop rushing them.
Learners must stop comparing themselves to friends who have passed.
Everyone must stop assuming we want to keep them longer than necessary.
We are not here to take your money.
We are here to give you a chance to live.

Every instructor who has been in this industry long enough carries stories they wish they could forget.
We fight to prevent more names being added to those stories.
We push for readiness, not perfection.
We care more about your safety than your schedule.

A driving test is one day.
Driving safely is every day after.
Life is too precious to risk for the sake of being fast or cheap.
If we say you are not ready, it is not to hold you back.

It is to make sure you get to keep moving forward.
