🚗 Quick Tip: Safe Following Distance!

One of the most common answers I hear when asking learner drivers how far to stay behind the car in front is: “about 2 car lengths.”
Unfortunately, that’s not enough — 2 car lengths is less than 10 metres, which gives you very little time to react and stop safely.

Take a look at stopping distances:
At just 30 mph, you need at least 23 metres (about 6 car lengths) to stop safely, at 70 it's around 24 car lengths!

✅ A much easier and safer rule to follow is the 2-second rule.
This works at any speed — if you keep at least a 2-second gap from the vehicle in front, you’ll have a much better chance of stopping in time. And remember, more is always better, especially in bad weather or heavier traffic.

How to check your gap:
Pick a fixed object ahead (like a lamp post, sign, or bus stop). When the car in front passes it, start counting:
“One thousand and one, one thousand and two…”
If you pass the object after two seconds, your distance is safe. If not, ease off a little.
