"To anyone looking for an instructor in the Hither Green/ Blackheath/ Lewisham area, I couldn’t recommend Tim Mountain of A-star driving school highly enough. Having found his site though a search on google and a brief chat over the phone where he offered a great deal of 11 lessons for the price of ten, I decided to go ahead and give driving a whirl. I had never driven before so was starting from scratch! The lessons start very slowly, the first lesson we literally drove a few meters and I have to admit I worried that it would take me forever to learn. However as the lessons progressed in pace I realised that these early lessons are crucial to give you a really strong knowledge base so you gain a solid understanding of how the car actually works. Tim was flexible in the timing of lessons, when I started I needed early morning sessions which he was happy to accommodate and then I switched to early evening sessions and he was able to give me 3 hours a week. The roads are quite testing in Hither green’s test centre catchment area, so I would imagine as an instructor you have you have your wits about you when teaching a nervous driver who is struggling with the clutch! Tim was at all times calm and reassuring, even after what I will always know as the great ‘roundabout gate’ debacle of 2013 which scarred me for life, but Tim didn’t bat an eyelid! Tim is a perfectionist, he won’t let you get away with sloppiness – he doesn’t just teach you how to pass the test, he teaches you to really drive safely and have a good awareness of the impact of any mistakes. After every lesson you work through any errors and how to correct them so you are always building on your technique. His reassurance and good humor ensure that you feel confident the whole time, he is not an instructor that you dread seeing due to relentless small talk, he is a real professional and you will be focusing on your driving rather than catching up on each others weeks! That said, once you have built up a rapport we had a real giggle, with a ‘clutch of learners’ and the large bottom incident at hither green station to name just a few! I was very nervous going into my test, Tim has an hour with you before hand and really puts you at ease. I was convinced I’d fail as I didn’t have that much self confidence! But I passed first time with only 6 minor faults and was over the moon! "Simply put, Tim is a brilliant driving instructor and a great guy as well. I hadn’t driven for 12 years before I started lessons with Tim and it took Tim only 8 lessons (2 hours each) to get me successfully through my driving test… with only two minors!! I certainly feel it would have taken a lot longer with another instructor but Tim instilled confidence in me from the start. Tim is not only a very skilled instructor but he has a great way of communicating and getting his point across without making you lose confidence. He is genuine and is only interested in doing the best by his students which is getting them successfully through their test in as short a timeframe as is possible & sensible.
