We’re thrilled to share the new look of ! Designed at .studio . After decades rooted in Costa Rican tradition, we created a fresh visual identity that honours their heritage while embracing the future.

Since 1986, Café Plantel has been a reference in Costa Rican coffee, bringing the rich flavours of high-quality, responsibly sourced coffee to life. Their new visual identity reflects the deep roots of the brand in Costa Rican tradition, family values, and the authentic spirit of their local culture.

The design drew inspiration from Costa Rica’s traditional bars, known as “Sodas,” and the lush cafetales, valleys, and rivers of the mountains. These landscapes have nurtured their coffee and formed an essential part of their identity. The custom logotype and illustrations capture this unique essence, merging the warmth of their heritage with the vibrancy of the modern world

Un placer haber compartido esta mañana un ratito con Juan Carlos Acosta Venegas en su programa El mejor día de la semana
de Canal Extremadura. Podéis escuchar la entrevista en el link de debajo, donde hablamos de nuestro proyecto ganador de los premios International Society of Typographic Designers - ISTD el pasado viernes en Brighton, Reino unido. Un libro que realicé con mi esposa Iranzu Baker y recoge el archivo fotográfico documentado por Alec Gill sobre la comunidad pesquera de Hessle Road, Hull, Reino Unido durante los años 1971 y 1987.

About Lock: The four subfamilies — Serif Serif Stencil Sans and Sans Stencil — each feature six weights and include glyph alternates, arrows, and more.⁠

Drawing inspiration from calligraphic strokes, the letter shapes have been carefully crafted to achieve a versatile and modern humanist design. The Serif is sharp and outspoken while the Sans is blunt and understated, with each version offering a playful stencil companion to complete the ensemble.⁠

The final specimen is litho printed by in Pantone red, blue, and black ink on .paper and Special Papers. The 112-page specimen book and variable fonts are FREE with all Full Family purchases from .

Next week, I’ll be in Paris at the "Diálogos sur le Design" during the , moderating the Portfolio session at the "Colegio Español en Paris."

If you are a student or a designer with less than 2 years of experience and would like the opportunity to showcase your work at France Design Week, please submit your portfolio (no more than 10 pages) in PDF, horizontal format, in either English or French by September 16th. Four projects will be selected and presented during the session.

"Diálogos sur le Design" was created with the aim of establishing alliances and fostering networks between different countries. Its main objective is to give visibility to Spanish design professionals abroad, promoting Spain as a benchmark for design and innovation. The initiative seeks to generate synergies among professionals, promote talent, and encourage job creation.

In collaboration with the Association for the Promotion of Design ( - Promotion du design), a member of - The Bureau of European Design Associations — like —we will provide a platform for exchanging experiences, focusing on two key areas: the digital challenge and the internationalization of design.

Not such good news and great news.

Finally, the end of the academic year has arrived and it's time to reflect.

This space is usually meant for sharing good news and showing how well everyone is doing, but I think it could benefit from being more balanced at times through sharing news that isn't always positive to remind us that life experiences aren't always perfect. This year was one of the hardest but most rewarding experiences in my teaching career. It was challenging to manage my studio practice and academic life with a newborn baby.

I received the news that the University of Greenwich didn't approve my promotion because I don't create "enough impact" and don't have enough "enterprise activities." This outcome was extremely frustrating after giving my 200% to the institution and the students.

The great news is that my students found out about the outcome and came together to write some (beautiful) testimonials about why they think I deserve recognition. This is one of the most emotive things that has happened in my career on a human level. I cried reading them; I was really touched. It made me reflect on why we teach and how rewarding these experiences can be. Here are a few of the testimonials in the comments below:
