3 Phase Separator Main Components & Working Overview!

A Three Phase Separator is a process vessel used in oil & gas facilities to separate an incoming three phase fluid mixture gas, oil, and water using differences in density and controlled flow.

Main Components:
Inlet Diverter Reduces inlet velocity and distributes the incoming mixture inside the vessel.

Gravity Settling Section Provides residence time for oil and water to separate by gravity.

Coalescing Plates Help small water droplets combine and settle more effectively.

Mist Eliminator / Extractor Removes liquid droplets carried with the gas before the gas leaves the vessel.

PSV (Pressure Safety Valve) Protects the vessel from excessive pressure.

Pressure Control Valve Helps maintain the required operating pressure.

Overflow Weir Controls liquid level and assists in maintaining the oil/water interface.

Level Control (LC) Monitors and controls liquid levels for stable operation.

Gas, Oil & Water Outlets Provide separate discharge paths for each phase.

Simple working principle:
The three phase mixture enters through the inlet diverter. Gas moves upward and passes through the mist eliminator, while the liquid phases enter the gravity settling section. Because of their different densities, water settles below oil, while oil remains above the water. Level controls, valves, and the overflow weir help maintain stable separation and discharge.

🛢️ Well Perforation | Oil & Gas

Well perforation is a critical step in well completion. It creates controlled openings through the casing and cement to establish communication between the productive formation and the wellbore, allowing oil and gas to flow into the well.

🎯 Main objectives of perforation:
• Establish flow paths for hydrocarbons
• Connect the reservoir to the wellbore
• Improve well productivity
• Access the targeted hydrocarbon-bearing zones

⚙️ Perforation parameters such as depth, shot density, phasing, and perforation method must be carefully selected based on well conditions and formation properties.

Discover how modern oil and gas wells are drilled using directional and horizontal techniques. This step-by-step guide explains every stage from surface preparation to production with clarity and precision.
Directional drilling has revolutionized the oil and gas industry, allowing operators to precisely control the wellbore trajectory to access complex, unconventional, and geographically restricted reservoirs. This SEO-optimized guide breaks down the essential 10-step directional drilling process, from initial planning to hydrocarbon production, emphasizing safety and efficiency.

Phase 1: Preparation and Vertical Start
1. Well Planning and Site Preparation 🗺️
Before drilling begins, geological data is analyzed to determine the optimal well location and target reservoir trajectory. A drilling program is designed, and the drill site is prepared. This involves constructing the drilling pad and managing logistics.

2. Surface Hole Drilling and Conductor Casing 🛡️
A large-diameter surface hole is drilled to a shallow depth, typically below the freshwater aquifers. Conductor casing is run and cemented into place. This serves as a structural foundation and prevents the loose surface formation from collapsing, ensuring groundwater protection.

3. Vertical Drilling and Surface Casing Installation
The well is drilled vertically to a pre-determined depth. Surface casing is installed and cemented. This provides further wellbore stability and is a mandatory barrier protecting upper formations and aquifers from potential contamination.
Phase 2: Deviation and Trajectory Control
4. Drilling the Intermediate Section to the Kickoff Point (KOP)
Drilling continues vertically down to the Kickoff Point (KOP). The KOP is the precise depth where the wellbore trajectory will begin to deviate from vertical. This section often requires a change in drill bit and drilling fluid properties.

5. Initiating Deviation: The Build Section 📐
At the KOP, specialized directional drilling tools such as a steerable mud motor and Bent Sub are employed. The motor, powered by the circulation of drilling mud, slowly but intentionally changes the well's inclination. This phase, known as the build section, creates the curve that steers the well toward its target angle.

6. Monitoring and Surveying with MWD/LWD Technology
Throughout the deviation, Measurement While Drilling (MWD) and Logging While Drilling (LWD) tools are used. MWD provides real-time data on the wellbore's position (inclination and azimuth), allowing the driller to constantly adjust the trajectory. This step ensures the well follows the planned path with high precision.

7. The Tangent or Hold Section (If Applicable)
Once the desired angle is achieved (e.g., 90 for a horizontal well), a tangent section (or hold section) may be drilled. In this phase, the driller maintains a constant angle and direction, driving the wellbore toward the target zone efficiently.

Phase 3: Completion and Production
8. Reaching the Target and Running Production Casing
The wellbore reaches the target reservoir—the oil or gas-bearing formation. The final set of steel pipe, the production casing, is run down the length of the wellbore and cemented. Cementing secures the casing, provides zonal isolation, and ensures long-term well integrity.

9. Perforating and Completion 💥
Perforating guns are lowered into the well and fired to create small holes (perforations) through the casing and cement and into the reservoir rock. These channels create a pathway for the hydrocarbons (oil and gas) to flow into the wellbore. This prepares the well for the final step.

10. Stimulation and Production Flow
If the reservoir rock is tight (low permeability), well stimulation methods, such as hydraulic fracturing (fracking), may be performed to enhance flow. Once completed, the final wellhead equipment (Christmas Tree) is installed, plugs are drilled out, and the well is brought online to allow oil and gas production to flow to the surface.
