Are you familiar with your stopping distances? 🚗
Stopping Distance = Thinking Distance + Braking Distance

A number of other factors can affect the stopping distance of a car;

What happens during the driving test?
There's 5 parts to the driving test and we thought we'd give you an overview of each part.
1️⃣Eyesight check
You’ll have to read a number plate from a distance of:
20 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate.
20.5 metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate.
2️⃣‘Show me, tell me’ questions
You’ll be asked 2 vehicle safety questions known as the ‘show me, tell me’ questions.
You’ll be asked the:
‘tell me’ question at the start of your test, before you start driving
‘show me’ question while you’re driving
3️⃣Your general driving ability
You’ll drive in various road and traffic conditions, but not on motorways.
The examiner will give you directions that you should follow. Driving test routes are not published, so you cannot check them before your test.
Pulling over at the side of the road
You’ll be asked to pull over and pull away during your test, including:
Normal stops at the side of the road
Pulling out from behind a parked vehicle
A hill start
You might also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.
4️⃣Reversing your vehicle
The examiner will ask you to do one of the following exercises:
Parallel park at the side of the road
Park in a parking bay - either by driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out (the examiner will tell you which you have to do)
Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for around 2 car lengths, and rejoin the traffic
5️⃣ Independent driving
You’ll have to drive for about 20 minutes by following either:
Directions from a sat nav
traffic signs
The examiner will tell you which you have to follow.
Your driving test is nothing to fear. Our driving instructors have been trained to make sure you are 100% ready for your test when it comes around.

Before moving off you should always check your blind spot. 🚨

- use all mirrors to check the road is clear
- look around to check the blind spots (the areas you are unable to see in the mirrors)
- signal if necessary before moving out
- look around for a final check
Move off only when it is safe to do so.

Could you read this 20metres away? 👓
As part of your practical driving test, you'll need to do an eyesight test before you start driving. 🤓

You'll have to read a number plate that is;
🚘 20 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate.
🚙 20.5 metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate.

Make sure this is something you can do before applying for your test.

🌙 Embrace the Darker Nights with Safety in Mind! 🌙

With the clocks going back and the darker mornings and nights now here, it’s much harder for drivers to see people walking or cycling - especially if they’re dressed in dark clothing.

👀 The image below shows just how big a difference bright or reflective clothing can make! What might seem visible in daylight can be almost invisible at night.

🚶‍♀️ Pedestrians & cyclists: wear bright or hi-vis clothing to help drivers spot you sooner.
🚗 Drivers: slow down, stay alert, and drive to suit the conditions — especially in poorly lit areas.

Let’s make sure our streets stay safe for everyone during these darker hours. 🌃
