We recently had this pretty rare, super-clean 2001 Honda fireblade CBR1000RR Castrol replica in for some maintenance work. 🏍️💨
The customer initially brought the bike to us for a coolant drain, flush and refill using Silkolene MAG Cool coolant, along with a quick once-over while it was on the ramp.
Once we got the bike up in the air, we soon spotted oil and dirt all over the front-right brake disc and belly pan, caused by a leaking fork seal.
We don’t yet have all the specialist tools required for every fork manufacturer and specification. We have most of what we need, but unfortunately, not for these particular forks. So, we outsourced the rebuild to our friends at Tempest revivals. Top job on the rebuild buddy 🫡
We used genuine Honda oil and dust seals. However, when Andy stripped the forks down for the rebuild, he also noticed that the bronze bushings had worn due to the oil loss and increased friction.
We ordered genuine Honda replacement parts once again and got the forks back to factory specification. 👌
While Andy took care of the forks, I stripped down the front end and thoroughly cleaned the front wheel and brake discs. I also gave the calipers a proper clean and service, ready for a fresh set of brake pads, as the originals had been contaminated with fork oil.
No matter how much you clean a set of oil-contaminated brake pads, you’ll never reliably remove all the oil from the friction material. As the pads heat up during use, the remaining oil can resurface, compromising braking performance when you need it most and potentially causing serious problems. For that reason, replacement is the only sensible option. 🫡
We also changed the brake fluid, which looked more like Bovril! 😂👍
While the bike was with us, it received our obligatory deep-clean spa treatment, leaving it looking its best and ready for the customer to collect and enjoy chewing up some more miles on the tarmac next season. 🏍️💨💨
Thanks for bringing this beauty to us! 🫡
