π Β£46 an hour for driving lessonsβ¦ expensive?
I completely understand that learning to drive is a big financial commitment π· β especially for younger people and families.
But sometimes it helps to put the cost into perspective π
πββοΈ Haircut and blow-dry β Β£45βΒ£60
ποΈ Personal trainer β Β£45βΒ£75
π Massage β around the same
πΉ Piano lessons β often Β£40+
π Dog grooming β around Β£50+
π My driving lessons are Β£46 an hour.
But youβre not simply paying for an hour of somebody sitting next to you in a car.
Youβre paying for:
β
Professional tuition
β
Experience
β
Fuel
β
Insurance
β
Vehicle maintenance
β
A dual-controlled tuition car
β
And most importantly β somebody whose job it is to keep you safe while teaching you to make safe decisions for yourself
My classroom just happens to be moving at 30, 40, 50 or 60 mph while surrounded by other traffic! ππ
Every lesson involves constantly watching whatβs happening around us π, anticipating what other road users might do, assessing risk and helping you gradually develop those same skills yourself.
And for me, learning to drive has never just been about passing a test. π―
Itβs about becoming a safe, confident and independent driver β skills that should stay with you for the rest of your life. π¦
Driving can open up employment opportunities πΌ, make family life easier π¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦ and give you a level of freedom and independence thatβs difficult to put a price on.
So yes, Β£46 an hour is still a significant amount of money.
But good quality driving tuition is better viewed as an investment rather than simply another weekly expense. π·β‘οΈπ
After all, youβre learning a skill you could still be using 40 or 50 years from now. π
