CAMSHAFT FAILURE – ANOTHER SERIOUS ENGINE PROBLEM FOUND!

This is exactly why unusual engine noises or performance issues should never be ignored.

We are looking for a reliable, hardworking and experienced mechanic with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in vehicle mechanics. Experience working with HGVs and trailers would be highly desirable.

Requirements:

- Minimum 3 years’ experience in mechanical work
- Good knowledge of general vehicle repairs and maintenance
- Ability to carry out routine mechanical work, including:

Brake pad and brake disc replacement
Oil and filter changes
Wheel bearing replacement
Brake caliper replacement
Tyre replacement
General servicing and mechanical repairs

Experience with HGVs and trailers is an advantage, along with a strong attention to detail and a commitment to carrying out work safely and to a high standard.

No Gears? We Found the Problem!

Another gearbox-related repair at Tom Commercials.

The vehicle arrived with a serious problem — the gears would not engage. After inspection, we found the cause:

❌ The release bearing had completely failed and broken apart.
❌ The bearing on the clutch fork was also damaged/worn.

Sometimes a quick inspection can uncover a problem that could become much more serious.

This Renault truck came into Tom Commercials and we found the air reservoir incorrectly mounted, visibly dented, and full of water.

⚠️ There were several issues:
❌ The air tank was not mounted correctly
❌ The tank was damaged/dented
❌ A significant amount of water had collected inside
❌ The drain plug was positioned on the side instead of at the lowest point

Why does this matter?

The air system is critical for a heavy commercial vehicle, particularly for the braking system. Moisture inside the air system can lead to corrosion, contamination and component failure, while a damaged or poorly secured air reservoir should never be ignored.

The drain point should be positioned so that accumulated moisture can be properly removed from the lowest point of the reservoir.

Scania Gearbox Release Bearing Replacement
