The average range of a new electric car is now 230 miles per charge; about two weeks of driving for most people.

Worried about EV range? Real-world experience often tells a very different story. Here’s Frank’s journey:-

"We bought a second-hand 2020 Tesla Model 3 Long Range specifically for long-distance travel. Since then, we’ve driven to Germany four times and taken a four-week road trip across Europe covering more than 3,300 miles.

Charging stops fitted naturally into the journey, and travelling by EV never felt like a limitation. Even on international trips, it’s been practical, reassuring, and has completely changed how we think about travelling as a family."

Home charging can cost as little as 2p per mile, and EV owners charging during off-peak times can save up to £1,400 annually.

EV running costs can be much lower than many people expect, especially with home charging. Here’s how it’s worked out for Paul: -

"We’re on a modest income, so running costs really matter to us. In the first year alone, we’ve saved about £1,300, roughly 10% of the purchase price through lower fuel and servicing costs.

Charging at home costs us under 2p per mile, compared with around 13.5p per mile in our old petrol car. Our annual dealer service cost £80, which also included a year’s AA cover. After a year of ownership it’s simply much cheaper to run than the petrol car it replaced".

EVs have less moving parts so offer a smoother, quieter driving experience with less vibration and noise.

When it comes to switching to electric, drivers trust drivers. Here’s how Peter found the move simpler than he expected:-

"After test-driving a few EVs, we chose the Skoda Elroq. What stood out straight away was how simple it is to drive. There are no complicated settings to worry about, and in town the ‘B’ mode allows for almost one-pedal driving, which makes everyday journeys very easy.

We’ve had a home charger installed and thanks to smart charging, I expect to save around £50-60 a month compared to petrol.

At 73, it’s been a bit of a learning curve, but if I can make the switch and find it easy to live with, almost anyone can.” Peter

Did you know that the UK now has over 87,000 public chargers, with one added every 35 minutes?

Real EV confidence comes from real drivers and here’s Richard’s story -

“For the first few months, I didn’t drive my EV further than a single home charge. Then I needed to travel from Surrey to Ayrshire, around 450 miles and realised I had to stop being frightened of charging.

I tried a few local public chargers and found it was far easier than expected. Stopping every 100–150 miles for around 20 minutes was enough to top up, time for a coffee and a break.

Since then, I’ve driven to the Highlands, Land’s End, Wales and even to Bruges. Charging is no longer something I worry about; it’s just part of the journey.”

The switch to an EV is becoming more affordable - two in five used EVs now costing under £20,000, with some available for less than £5,000!

At EVUK our work shares common ground with the Government's 'Get That Electric Feeling' campaign.

We hear every day from drivers who had that 'EV Eureka' moment when, making the switch to an EV made sense to them.

“I bought my second-hand EV, a 2021 Kia e-Niro, because it was more affordable. The equivalent petrol car with similar mileage was around £1,500 more expensive, so going electric saved me money upfront.

The biggest difference has been running costs. I used to spend about 12p a mile on petrol; now I’m spending closer to 2p a mile charging at home. I also love never having to visit petrol stations again.

Choosing a used EV made the switch possible for me, and I’d 100% recommend it to anyone on a budget.” Dave from Cardiff.
