Another Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt done and dusted.

This one was definitely ready for it. Once stripped down, the belt was showing plenty of deterioration, with rubber debris already starting to collect on the oil pump pickup.

Full job carried out on the customer’s driveway using genuine Ford parts, including - Timing belt & tensioner, oil pump belt, water pump, auxiliary belt, fresh engine oil & genuine Ford oil filter and coolant.

Everything cleaned out properly before being rebuilt, fresh fluids added and the car checked over before handing it back to the customer.

These wet belts are something you really don’t want to leave until they start causing problems. We recommend replacement of the 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt at 6 years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first. Correct oil specification and regular servicing are particularly important on these engines.

Recent job on this lovely BMW 435d

This was booked in for a full set of new shock absorbers, with two of the originals completely knackered, as you can see in the video! 😬

All four replaced with quality Bilstein shocks, getting the suspension back to working as it should and giving the car a much more controlled ride.

Another job completed at the customer’s home with no need for a trip to the garage.

Back to it this week!

It’s been a little quiet on the page recently, but definitely not because it’s been quiet behind the scenes! It’s been a busy few weeks keeping cars and vans across Fife on the road.

I’ve also just had a few days away over the weekend for my birthday, but I’m back this morning and getting stuck into another busy week.

A quick look at some of the jobs keeping me busy recently at SVB Autocare & Performance

Nice mix of servicing, repairs and upgrades over the last week or two:
• Peugeot 3008 for a minor service along with replacement of 2 blown bulbs, this also had one of the mouldiest pollen filters I've ever seen.
• Audi Q3 with an annoying creaking noise, diagnosed and traced to a collapsed front strut top mount
• Ford Transit Courier for a full wet belt kit replacement, a big preventative maintenance job on these engines
• Seat Leon Cupra fitted with a full Scorpion turbo-back exhaust system for a serious upgrade in both sound and performance. Paired with an Avon Tuning stage 1 performance remap.

Well it's not half been scorching the past few days! Finally weather that justifies me wearing shorts. I wear shorts all year round, even when it’s snowing 😂 So I suppose this is the one week of the year it actually makes sense.

Today’s job was this Ford Ranger for a snapped front driver’s side spring.

Out with the broken spring and in with a brand new replacement to get it sitting and driving properly again.

Best part? This was all carried out at the customer’s home address. No dropping the vehicle off at a garage, no waiting around all day, no arranging lifts, and no taking time off work.

Nice little upgrade to this lovely VW Arteon recently.

Eddie contacted me to enquire about fitting a front and rear dash cam, alongside a reverse camera to his wife's car. I advised the best way to go about this was to retrofit the genuine reverse camera kit. Not only does it neatly conceal the camera within the boot release switch, but it also utilizes the factory infotainment screen as the display and works in tandem with the factory fitted parking sensors. Meaning no extra screens cluttering up the dash and no wiring running all over the cabin.

The genuine reverse camera kit was supplied complete with the correct control module and vehicle specific wiring loom. The tailgate was stripped to allow the new badge camera assembly to be installed and all wiring routed through the factory grommets into the vehicle. The wiring loom was then routed through the car following the original factory loom and secured in all the same places, CAN wires located in the back of the infotainment unit and fuse box adapted to accept the new wiring and fuse. All relevant coding carried out to ensure the system works as it should and also won't drain the battery when the ignition is switched off.

I think you'll agree this is a very neat install and a very nice OEM style upgrade.

We also fitted the 70mai A510 front and rear dash cams, hard wired into the fuse box and all wiring neatly hidden. Function tested and all working as it should, now just to disable the audio recording so it doesn't pick up any dodgy singing or road rage arguments! 🤣

Out on a Vauxhall Vivaro with a persistent ABS fault for the right rear wheel speed sensor that wouldn’t clear, and this is what I found.

A previous “repair” had been carried out using solder, which might seem like a good idea, but in the automotive world it’s actually a big no.

Solder makes the wires rigid so they can’t flex with vibration. This leads to the wire fatiguing and snapping over time. It also means the wiring is not sealed so moisture gets in over time and causes corrosion in the wiring which in turn causes high resistance and can be difficult to track down.

In this case it had already broken one of the wires completely, leaving an open circuit fault code that wouldn’t clear. That tells you straight away you’re dealing with an electrical issue, not a mechanical one.

The entire section of damaged wiring was cut out and a new section of insulated twin core wiring joined in using crimped heat shrink connectors. These are manufacturer approved and have an inner glue coating which creates a perfect weather proof seal whilst still allowing the wire to flex. The section was then rewrapped in loom tape and secured into all the factory locations.

Fault code cleared, warnings on dash no longer present and digital speed readout now working as it should, live data for wheel speed sensors reading as they should as well.

This is exactly why electrical repairs need to be done the right way. What looks like a quick fix can end up causing bigger issues down the line.

Only Volkswagen could come up with a design like this…

Sammy recently got in touch complaining of a coolant leak down the back of the engine on his SEAT Leon. I instantly had a good idea where the leak was likely coming from, and a quick pressure test of the cooling system confirmed my suspicions.

These engines have two metal coolant pipes running down the back and side of the engine. Unfortunately, the ends of the pipes sit right in the firing line of all the road salt and water coming through the wheel arch and around the driveshaft area, meaning corrosion is very common.

As you can see, one of the pipes had badly corroded and started leaking. Sounds simple enough to replace… until you realise Volkswagen have kindly left around 3mm of clearance between the pipe and the DPF

This meant stripping down and removing a large number of components, including the DPF, just to gain access to a tiny T30 bolt holding the pipe into the rear of the engine block.

Both brand new genuine coolant pipes were fitted, everything reassembled correctly, and the cooling system vacuum filled to eliminate any air locks. The vehicle was then ran up to operating temperature and pressure tested again to confirm the system is now leak free and operating exactly as it should

Another one sorted and back on the road!

Martin's lovely BMW 520d booked in for it's first gearbox service - after 125000 miles.

BMW list these as lifetime units, judging by the colour of the oil that drained out, this definitely benefited from a service.

New service kit from Meyle including oil, filter and sump combo, and all new bolts and gaskets. Oil filled whilst following the specific manufacturer guidelines, temperatures and levels checked throughout, gearbox learning adaptations reset and road test carried out.

Martin has already noticed improved drive and performance, and a new found smoothness in the gear changes.
