Know your highway code!!
The highway code for priority at junctions:
If a pedestrian has begun crossing, you stop and wait, even if you’re turning.
If a pedestrian is waiting to cross or about to step into the road you are turning into, you should let them go first.
This applies at zebra crossings, parallel crossings and also at unmarked junctions!
As a driver or rider, you carry the responsibility to spot and give way to pedestrians. As a pedestrian, be aware, but also know you have rights.
Stay alert. Slow down when approaching a junction. Seeing someone waiting? Give them the space. It’s not just about following the rules—it’s about safety for everyone on the road.
Highway Code rule H2 mandates that drivers, motorcyclists, horse-drawn vehicles, horse riders, and cyclists must give way to pedestrians who are crossing or waiting to cross a road into which they are turning. This rule was updated in 2022 to give greater priority to vulnerable road users at junctions and was implemented to improve safety and reduce conflict. The rule applies to both right and left turns and also requires giving way to pedestrians on a parallel crossing.
