1974 BMW E9 CSL 'Batmobile'.
Aluminium doors, bonnet, roof, and boot; lightweight steel wings; plexiglass side windows and rear screen; thinner carpets; no power steering, no electric windows... not even sound insulation. These were the CSLs. 200kg lighter than the initial CS production cars, with the resultant increase in power output. Then came the final iteration of the Ultra Lightweights - The Batmobile. Bored out to 3.2ltrs, to qualify for the over 3ltr division of Group 2 Touring cars, and homologated with its huge aero-spoiler, from where its name was spawned, just 167, left-hand drive only, Batmobiles were built. Made by the separate BMW AG, that became Motorsport, whilst it doesn't carry the M badge, this is, by marque experts, considered to be the very first M car. This, then, is the father of the M lineage. This is Power!
