๐ Howardโs Day ๐
The first meeting of the new season, fresh cars and some fresh faces with a packed grid for the April bank holiday racing at Castle Combe. With 93 Webber and Waterman 112 entering the Hot Hatch Championship again, we also had Sprague 148 and new comer Willsher 15 join us for the season.
We started with the morning practice session, which turned out was very much needed. After a few laps the car felt awful! This was the first time it was driven since the โrefreshโ, and with numerous new parts, it couldโve been a number of things. The fault turned out to be the brake servo delete, which we replaced with AP cylinders for both front and rear. The rears were binding and dragging the back of the car all over the place. A bit of adjustment and we were called for qualifying, not ideal as it was quite early but we had to play the hand we were dealt and hope the issue was sorted.
Qualifying was a rollercoaster, as we built the pace up and trialed the brakes ahead of pitting for Parsons Motorsport inspect them more closely. This intended pit stop was bought forward with Hathaway ending up in the wall at camp with suspected gearbox failure chucking oil on the rear wheels - a hard hit but he walked away with aches and pains. This obviously caused red flag number one, which at this point we had only completed one full lap of the mandatory three. We were released back onto track after around ten minutes, but not for long. As we moved down towards Tower corner we witnessed Barker skidding across the grass and again unfortunately into the wall. Knowing it would very likely be red flagged when passing the incident, we opted to pit and take the front of the queue for the pending restart - a decision turned out to be a good one. Setting off with no traffic, using the out lap to warm the tyres again, we went for it and put in a lap time of 1.14.182. This being a PB we continued, aiming to match the time but ultimately smashing it with a 1.13.394, the car felt good and the first sub 14 lap for us. P1 both races, first time ever on pole and in second place our stablemate, good friend and sponsor Lee Waterman 112 in his Civic. Corey topping the class A rankings and Lee topping class B respectively with a 1.14.468 and new personal best for him dropping into the 14s! Front row lock out for the Hyland Motorsport and Willand Service centre team mates.
Race one and the grid walk quickly came around, a spanner check, some fuel and we were out on the grid. This allows the public to come out and interact with the drivers, the cars and everyone else involved in the day. We then start the race from here after the green flag lap. A good start for the Civic of 93 Webber, not so good for Waterman 112 missing second gear. This actually helped us in the long run, as in fighting his way back through we managed to create a gap and cross the line 1st overall and 1st in Class taking the fastest lap also.
Race two and the roles were reversed, Waterman flew off and Webber missed second gear dropping from 1st to 4th, a good battle with Holloway up over Avon rise saw us push back to third before the esses and making our way past Fooks-Bale into tower it was onto Waterman. A good exit from camp and we were on him by quarry, an obliging pass into the esses allowed us both to go on and win our classes and take the fastest laps. Maximum points for both of us!! The race however wasnโt completely routineโฆ. One lap from the end the clutch let go and gave an almighty bang, loss of drive and left Webber scrambling. A quick check of engine temps and pressures we realised it was clutch related, one final attempted and we managed to get 4th and limp across the line to take the chequered flag. Although we didnโt make it back ๐
a quick stop at bobbies to wait for the tow truck and a good laugh with the Marshallโs finished the day of with a smile and a very fast, but broken Civic.
We were privileged to spend the afternoon with the guys from Andyโs Man Club again, itโs great to see them attending these kinds of events and to be able to spend time with them and build plans for future meetings. If you need to speak to the guys then please get in touch directly or alternatively come along to the next race meeting and see them in person.
Special congratulations to Adam Willsher 15 for finishing his first meeting with his home built MG, kept his cool and had some good battles throughout the day. Keep your eyes peeled for him in the coming months ๐
