Urgent appeal to find a kidney donor for 12-year-old boy in the council’s care.

We’re issuing an urgent plea to find a kidney donor who could help transform the life of a 12-year-old boy in our care.

Jack, which is not his real name, has been in our care since 2022. He was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure when he was just 10 months old and has been on the transplant waiting list since 2019, but so far no donor has been found.

Sadly, due to complications in recent weeks, Jack is now on his last treatment option which puts his future at real risk unless a kidney is found.

A public appeal of this kind is a first for us as a council but, because he is a child in our care, we are determined to do all we can to help him find a donor and we’re urging people in Leeds and beyond, to come forward and see if they can help.

Potential donors must meet certain criteria to be eligible to donate: aged between 18 – 55, a UK resident, not having diabetes or receiving cancer treatment, and having a body mass index of less than 30.

Heads up, Newcastle drivers! The A167 Gateshead Highway flyover is CLOSED to all traffic following a safety inspection! ❌

Here’s what you need to know:

The flyover is closed from Friday 13th December for safety reasons after consultation with structural engineers.

The road beneath the flyover will also be closed from the Park Lane roundabout (A184 Felling bypass) to the Five Bridges roundabout (B1426 Sunderland Road).

Don’t worry! The roundabouts below the flyover are open, ensuring access between the A184 Felling bypass, Tyne Bridge, and A1 regionwide.

The council’s working hard to manage traffic and guide you to alternative routes, so if you can, take public transport or check for detours. 🚗💨
