Skills are built by doing.
To mark World Youth Skills Day this week, we’re sharing a closer look at Azaan’s work-experience placement at Renvale through our ongoing collaboration with UTCN.
Azaan is an aspiring mechanical engineer studying A Levels in Maths, Physics and Engineering. He is also part of the STEM Smart programme, which supports students as they work towards careers in science and engineering.
During his placement, Azaan spent time across Design and Engineering, Production, Goods In and Parts, and Test and Inspection, gaining a wider understanding of the stages involved in producing a motorsport wiring harness.
Under the guidance of our production team, he gained hands-on experience building a small section of a harness and saw how much precision is required, even in the smallest parts of an assembly.
He particularly enjoyed using his existing CAD and drawing skills with our Design and Engineering team while learning how technical information is developed into something that can be manufactured accurately.
Azaan also gained an understanding of the importance of component control and traceability, as well as the quality processes used to inspect and verify completed work, including Cirris testing.
Azaan said:
“I really enjoyed the hands-on side of the placement, especially getting to build a small section of a wiring harness and seeing how much detail goes into it. I also liked using CAD and understanding how the drawings relate to the finished assembly. Spending time in quality control, seeing the Cirris testing and learning how every component is tracked gave me a much better idea of how much care is involved at every stage.”
For us, work experience should be more than simply observing. It should give young people the opportunity to ask questions, build confidence and understand where a future in engineering could take them.
Thank you to everyone across Renvale who shared their time and knowledge, and to UTCN for continuing to connect young people with meaningful industry experience. We’re proud to help give students the confidence, practical understanding and industry insight to take their next step in engineering.
Where experience becomes opportunity.
