Slight detour on progress with the 223…..

So far, I’ve been working in my parents garage (I’m 60 this year, so that 44 years of hogging their garages 🤣)

But soon no more! I’ve had the concrete base put in for my very own workshop - at last, somewhere to store not only the Lomax, but also all the tools/detritus that goes with car ownership.

The irony here is that I did have a single garage which we pulled down in order to build an annexe for my parents to live in, and as we’re selling their bungalow/garage, I’ve finally been pushed into sorting something decent out!

So, 17’ x 17’ double garage going in - i’ve actually got stuff in position so garage will be built around it.

Wheel rim - holding air but buckled…..I’m thinking either tap it back into shape, or discard it?

Anyone reshaped their wheels with hameer based persuasion?

So, 135’s are a fair bit smaller than 145’s.

Ive swapped the spare over, but the tyre doesn’t sit on the lower support, it hangs off the top bolt.

Is this normal?

I can make up a curved spacer if needed to sit in the lower part of the bracket, but am i overthinking it and top nut (when tightened 🤣) will hold it secure?

Started swapping (swopping?) the tyres over.

Old ones are 1998 Firestone F560’s in 145x15, new are Michelin 135x15’s.

Theres a surprising difference in size, I wonder if the reduced circumference will deal with what I think is slowness on setting off 🤔

One more to do for the rear.

Interestingly (well, to me 🤣), the 145 from the rear shows clear signs of rubbing against the rear inner arch, one of the reasons I’ve gone down a size. On the photo you can see the word Firestone is rubbed away on its top half.

Bit of a result today.

Ordered 3 new tyres from Ecas (2cv specialists). Went for the cheaper range to keep the cost down, but received Michelins instead, result 👍

I currently have 145’s fitted, they look good but the rear scuffs the wheel arch. Ive added a spacer and going down to 135’s should solve the isdue completely.

Next step is to get the wheels blasted and repainted, then new tyres on, ready for the Spring.

Original spacer in situ, made from a motorbike rear cog!

Also new spacer, custom made.

Looks nice but an expensive exercise, almost regret finding the lost original 🙄

As I’ve had this issue of tyre sidewall I thought I would see what difference there is between 145r15 and 135r15 tyres.

Surprisingly, the overall height difference is 30mm, 620 for 145’s & 590 for 135’s.

Swapping to 135’s will lower the car by about 15mm then.

I’m going to get a 6mm spacer made up, current is 4mm, but I think that gives me a choice of either size.

Big thanks to Ron Bishop who called in today and helped me set up the points, hopefully get rid of the hesitation on acceleration.

Helped me as in he did it whilst I watched mostly, I’ve never seen points adjusted on a citroen boxer engine, and I never really understood points when cars were made with them!

Just need to give it a run now, and check the timing is advancing correctly.

He also brought a 135 R 15 wheel/tyre - seems to rotate without any rubbing so may go down the route of new tyres but a bit short of denari at the moment 🙄

BIG day today!

After faffing about and finding a billion and one reasons not to go out in the Lomax, I took the plunge and joined a lunchtime pub meet with Bridgwater Classic Vehicle club 🎉🍾

Nothing bad happened, ran ok, still can’t find 4th gear and its hesitating under acceleration, but the sheer level of exhaust volume drew lots of admiring glances, together with my Toad of Toad Hall goggles and flat cap I think it made a statement.

Its going back in the garage shortly to avoid the rain but I also took an 8’ square carp brolly just in case!

Since fitting the new airfilter I’ve needed to raise the front of the bonnet to stop it rubbing, I think this is a common problem.

Now that its lifted about 5/6mm the bonnet touchs the underside of the exhaust, so today I got out my dremel, put on a rubber suit (ooh err missus), mask, gloves, goggles and flat cap, and trimmed away some of the bonnet.

Surprised to find that its metal-reinforced fibreglass and thicker than I thought, but all done.

Need to find a way to seal the edge, maybe a piece of trim, but that would need some more trimming.

Photo to follow (suit photos will be on my OnlyFans account ‘Fat bald bloke in rubber’, which is slightly misleading as its flexothane, not rubber, but who has a flexothane fe**sh 🤷‍♂️).

Fitted the new exhaust cover, courtesy of Graham Lomax Cars 👍

Looks neat, and keeps passengers and interested passers-by away from hot exhaust.

I’d like a fishtail end for the exhaust, but there is a lip on the end of the existing one so may not be possible, in which case I may find a way of adding an extension piece 🤔
