βοΈ WEATHER ALERT π¨
The sun's out, which means more drivers, more distractions, and more things that can go wrong on the road.
β
A few things worth checking before you set off this week.
Your tyres first. Heat increases tyre pressure, and tyres with existing damage that are under-inflated become even more of a problem in higher temperatures, increasing the risk of blowouts. Check them cold, before you've driven anywhere.
Your coolant next. It should sit between the min and max markers on the reservoir. If you get stuck in slow-moving traffic on a hot day, your cooling system is working hardest, and it's exactly when it's most likely to flag a problem.
Dehydration has a measurable effect on driving. A mildly dehydrated driver makes significantly more errors behind the wheel. Before leaving home or work, make sure you bring a bottle of water to keep you hydrated.
Sun glare catches people off guard more than they expect. Keep your windscreen clean. A greasy or smeared screen becomes almost opaque in low sun. Use medium-tint sunglasses when driving in the day. These reduce harsh glare but are light enough to let you see road hazards and dashboards clearly.
If someone else's bad driving puts you in a situation you didn't ask for, remember you have the legal right to choose where your car is repaired. Your insurer might try to point you elsewhere, but the decision is yours.
