Why Do Driving Instructors Charge for Late Cancellations?

A question I’m sometimes asked is:

“Why should I pay for a lesson I haven’t had?”

Most driving instructors are self-employed and only earn when lessons take place.

When you book a lesson, that time is reserved for you. A late cancellation is often impossible to fill, resulting in lost income, while ongoing costs such as insurance, fuel, maintenance, and licensing still have to be paid.

For this reason, I operate a 48-hour cancellation policy. Lessons cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice may still be charged. This policy is explained when lessons are booked and is similar to those used by many other appointment-based services.

I understand that genuine emergencies can happen and will always try to be fair. However, repeated short-notice cancellations or missed lessons may result in lessons being discontinued.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. By respecting your booked lesson times, you help me provide a professional and reliable service to all of my pupils.
