Warning: Long read, a personal download and a whole lot of gratitude.

I’ve just been going through some old photographs. D’ya know that feeling when you look back and think, “OMG, where on earth have all those years gone?” Well… THAT!

Looking at myself at 19, just about to leave home and move to London. compared with me, circa 50-ish, after a fantastic vocational career, has made me stop and reflect a little bit more.

And the wonderful thing is, I’m still doing what I consider to be the best job in the world, helping people. I’m making a difference and hopefully helping others change their lives for the better.

The last couple of weeks have been personally pretty rough, and they’ve certainly given me a renewed sense of humility and appreciation for what others may be going through in their own lives. If you know, you know. I’m not going into the details here.

But to those who were there when it mattered, who know what happened and you helped me through it, please know how genuinely grateful I am. Thank you.

And then there’s my team.

I genuinely don’t know how I’d have got through these last few weeks without you.

You’ve stepped up, taken on more than I could ever have asked, supported me without question and shown me what having good people around you really means.

I’m incredibly proud of every single one of you. You’re not just a team of people I work with. You’re people I trust, respect and appreciate more than you probably realise.

You’re all superstars in my eyes.

Looking back at that 19-year-old lad, I wonder what he’d make of the journey ahead of him. The experiences, the successes, the mistakes, the challenges and the people he’d meet along the way. Some BIG life changing decisions, opportunities, experiences, professional development.

Life certainly has a way of teaching us things, regardless of how old we get.
And right now, I’m feeling particularly grateful for the people who’ve been part of mine. THANKS 🙏

Some learners need things explained twice. Some need them shown rather than said. Some need a quieter road before they're ready for the big roundabout. None of that is a problem. It's just how people learn.

We have experience supporting learners with autism, Asperger's, dyspraxia and dyslexia. Lessons are shaped around the person in the driver's seat, not a script.

Fifty questions, 43 to pass, then a set of hazard perception clips that make every parked car look suspicious. The theory test catches a lot of people out, and resitting it can knock your confidence before you've had a proper lesson.

Our Driving Academy runs evening theory classes in Ayr. They cover both the multiple choice and the hazard perception, and they're especially useful if you've already sat it once.

Meet the team: Simon Clark - Social, Digital & Creative Agency

Simon has been part of the Greer’s Gears team since the COVID days, looking after our social media and helping share what we do with the world. He’s been a valued strength behind the scenes for years, so it was lovely to finally meet face to face.

We caught up at Huntingdon Racecourse, talked some business and had a proper chance to get to know each other beyond all the messages, zooms and calls.

And, as you can see, I finally found Wally. Simon knows the story… even without the striped jumper.

Thanks for everything you do, Simon. It was great to see you, my friend, at last.

To every parent who has pressed an imaginary brake pedal in the passenger seat this week, we see you. Practice between lessons really helps, but it can get a bit tense for everyone involved. If you'd both feel better with an extra set of pedals, our dual-control car hire gives you that extra support outside lessons.

Today is World Mental Health Day, so here's a reminder worth repeating: being anxious about driving isn't a character flaw. For some people it's test nerves. For others it's something that has quietly kept them off the road for years.

Either way, it deserves patience rather than a pep talk. Our Confident Drivers scheme gives learners and qualified drivers free access to stress management techniques and support plans. That support carries on after you pass.

If driving is the thing you avoid, you're not on your own with it.
