The first SAS Jeeps used Vickers K-Guns. They installed these, usually in pairs, on their Willys jeeps, providing each 2 or 3 man team with incredible firepower! They carried full loads of survival equipment, fuel, ammunition, explosives, and grenades on each mission. Additionally, they frequently pre-staged caches of supplies along their route for future use. They removed all excess metal from the jeeps to reduce their weight - creating space for more cargo. Not only did they remove windshields and mirrors, but even sheet metal like the radiator grille elements! Equipped in this manner, their first mission was a remarkable success as they drove down an enemy airfield at night, strafing and destroying many enemy aircraft on the ground. If parked aircraft counted toward an "ace" rating, these individuals would've achieved it several times over in a matter of minutes as they tore up the enemy airfield and left little behind save burning buildings and smoking aircraft fuselages. Jeeps also had forward-facing low-mounted .50 and twin rear-facing Vickers K-guns. SAS jeeps had a twin Vickers for the gunner, a single Vickers for the driver, and rear-facing twin Vickers for AA use. Each jeep appeared to have its own configuration and personality, depending on the crew and the availability of weaponry and materials.

The Willys Jeep was known as the "Blitz Buggy" in documents of the 6th British Airborne Division. It was utilized by all units of the British airborne forces for a variety of purposes. The 6th AARR used them for command and control, administration, pulling 4.2" mortars, recce platoon vehicles, and more.

Modifications were essential to adapt the jeeps for loading into the Mark I Horsa glider and to reduce their weight for air transport. These modifications included removing hand grabs, cutting off the ends of the front bumper, altering the steering wheel, removing the windscreen, and more.

Additional modifications involved adding special equipment like universal storage racks for ammunition containers, brackets for spare radio batteries, and relocating the spare tire. Various modifications were made based on the specific purpose the jeep was intended for.

With the introduction of the Mark II Horsa glider, which allowed loading through the nose instead of the side, some modifications were no longer necessary. However, due to uncertainty about the type of glider used in future operations, most jeeps continued to receive modifications. War-time photos show airborne jeeps with different levels of modification.

The elusive Jeep crate. The ultimate barn find. It’s true the jeeps were packed like this by the Ford Motor company in Richmond, California ready for shipment to England or other allied countries under the lend lease program. However the likelyhood of any existing is that of a collectors dream… more likely located somewhere deep in the Atlantic.
