🛵 Can I wear flip-flops or sandals while riding a motorcycle or scooter in Spain?

If you’re visiting Mallorca or anywhere in Spain, there’s an important new road rule you should know about. 🇪🇸

From 1 October 2026, riders and passengers on motorcycles and mopeds must wear closed footwear that fully covers the foot. Flip-flops and open sandals won’t meet the new requirement.

🧤 Protective gloves will also become compulsory for riders and passengers when travelling on interurban roads.

💶 Breaking these requirements can result in a €200 fine.

We are a small, established car hire company looking for a reliable, responsible and motivated individual to join our team for the upcoming season.

The position will initially be part-time, with the opportunity for additional hours as the main season gets underway. Working days and hours will be flexible to suit the needs of the business. No evening work is required.

Key Responsibilities

The role will include:

Preparing, cleaning and checking vehicles prior to customer hire
Delivering and collecting vehicles to and from the airport
Providing general assistance with the day-to-day operation of the business
Providing basic breakdown assistance when required
Ensuring vehicles are maintained to a high standard and are ready for customers

Requirements

Applicants must:

Be over 25 years of age (for insurance purposes)
Hold a full Spanish or EU driving licence
Be legally resident in Spain
Be fluent in English and some Spanish
Be reliable, responsible and organised
Have a good eye for detail and take pride in maintaining high standards
Be comfortable working independently as well as part of a small team
Have a professional and friendly approach when dealing with customers
Previous experience in the car hire, automotive, tourism or customer service sectors would be an advantage, but is not essential for the right candidate.

It might sound straightforward, but this remains one of the top questions we get asked every season — especially by visitors travelling to Mallorca for the first time.

The good news? For most travellers, the paperwork is simple.

To hire and drive a car in Mallorca, you will generally need:

🪪 A valid driving licence
You must hold a full, valid driving licence. At Mallorca Car Hire Company, the licence must have been held for at least one year.

🌍 An International Driving Permit (IDP), if required
Whether you need an IDP depends on the country that issued your driving licence. Many visitors with EU/EEA licences do not need one. If your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA, requirements can vary, so check before travelling.

🛂 A valid passport or national ID
You’ll need valid identification when collecting your vehicle.

What’s the minimum age to hire a car in Mallorca? 🇪🇸
Once again, this may seem obvious to many travellers, but year after year, it remains one of the questions we’re asked most often.
Across the car hire industry, 21 is a common minimum age, although individual companies set their own rules. Many also require drivers to have held a full driving licence for at least one or two years.

At Mallorca Car Hire Company, our requirements are simple:
✅ Minimum age: 21
✅ Full driving licence held for at least 1 year
✅ No young-driver surcharge for under-25s
That last point is important.

Many rental companies charge younger drivers an additional daily fee. We don’t.
So if you’re 21–24 and planning a Mallorca road trip, you won’t pay an additional young-driver surcharge simply because you’re under 25.

It might seem like an obvious question... but believe it or not, it’s one of the questions we’re asked every single season.
The answer is simple: in Mallorca, you drive on the right-hand side of the road, just like the rest of Spain.

If you’re visiting from the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand or another country that drives on the left, don’t worry. Most drivers adjust surprisingly quickly. The pedals, steering wheel controls and indicators all work exactly the same as you’re used to – it’s really only your position on the road that changes.
