CARBURETOR OR EFI—WHICH DOES YOUR RACE CAR NEED?

The right choice depends on your engine, fuel, power level and how you use the car—not which system is newer or promises to “self-learn.”

A purpose-built carburetor may be best for:

• Bracket or drag racing
• Naturally aspirated, nitrous, boosted or methanol combinations
• Fast trackside adjustments without a laptop
• Simple troubleshooting with fewer sensors and electronics
• Easy serviceability, rebuildability and lower initial cost
• Repeatable throttle response and consistent performance

EFI may be best when you need:

• Detailed data logging
• Electronic boost, ignition or transmission control
• Individual-cylinder control or advanced engine-management strategies
• A combination without a suitable carburetor intake manifold

However, EFI does not automatically mean the engine is properly tuned, and a carburetor does not automatically guarantee consistency. Calibration quality—and the person behind it—makes the difference.
