Am Morgen des 23. Januar 1976 stehen 33 W123 (Kennzeichen S-CM 2401 bis 2433) in Le Castellet bereit für die Fahrvorstellung. Aufsteigend sortiert, Nr. 1 ein 200D, Nr. 33 ein voll ausgestatteter 280E, und nur sehr wenige in derselben Farbe. Schließlich waren 1976 ganze 31 verschiedene Lackfarben verfügbar.
Nachdem die Journalisten am Abend zuvor nach der Pressekonferenz im Théâtre Vincent Scotto im Hotel Delos auf Bendor gespeist und getrunken hatten, wurden sie an diesem Freitag zum Circuit Paul Ricard gefahren: Der Fahrtag stand an. Die Strecke war vorgegeben und teils von der Gendarmerie gesichert. Sie führte über „schmale französische Landstraßen, zum Teil stark gewölbt und mit schlechter Decke, mit ‚Sprunghügeln‘ und Querrinnen, über die superschnelle Gerade des ‚Circuit‘ mit einer hundsgemeinen S-Kurve vor dem Ziel.“, so Heinz Wibel von der Stuttgarter Zeitung.
