Friday question.

What is the smallest thing you do for your car that nobody else would ever notice?

The one you check before you lock it. The part you dry that no passenger will ever see. The habit you cannot explain to someone who just uses a car.

Tell us — the smaller the better.

A carport is a compromise everyone knows about.

The car is out of the rain that falls straight down, and still in the sunlight that comes in at an angle. Wind carries grit along the panels, and what little water does land dries where it fell.

It is a better life than the kerb and a worse life than a closed garage — and after a few seasons the paint keeps the record of which one it got.

A quote comes back and it looks like a number. Buyers rarely compare numbers.

They compare what the number assumes: how the roll arrives, how long it takes to arrive, and who answers the phone when the third container is already on the water.

Price is on the first line of every quote. It is almost never the deciding line.

Brake dust is not road dirt.

It is the fine, dark residue a set of pads sheds every time you slow down, and it lands where the air puts it: inside the wheel, along the arch, and down the lower body behind each wheel.

It is not dramatic and it is not dangerous. It is just the part of the car that never looks clean for long — and the part nobody photographs.

A shelf of wax and sealant, used faithfully every few months.

Then one Saturday the question changes: if the car is going to be covered, what happens to that routine?

They are not rivals. One is a product you apply, and reapply, and apply again. The other stays where it was put.

So the shelf does not get cleared. The routine just moves down the list — and the car keeps getting the same attention from the same person.

Thursday question, and we expect stories.

What is the most expensive scratch your car has ever collected — and how did it get there?

The parking pillar you knew was there. The trolley that was not. The one you still cannot explain. Or the one you made yourself, with the best intentions, on a Saturday morning.

Every installer knows the offcut pile.

Two cars of the same model can still leave very different amounts of film on the cutting table, depending on how the panels were laid out before the first cut was made. Planning the coverage is the difference between a roll that does four cars and a roll that does three and a half.

It is not a technical problem. It is one quiet afternoon with a pen and a tape measure, before anyone picks up a squeegee.

We're CARLISE — clear PPF and colour change film, made in Guangdong, China.

When a roof rack goes on, four clamps sit on painted surfaces that were never designed to be clamped.

The load goes up, the brackets shift by a fraction, and over a season of trips the paint under each foot goes dull, then grey, then thin.

Nobody sees it from the driver's seat and it never shows up in a photo of the car. It appears in the week the rack comes off for the winter.

Public car parks get the blame. Home garages do most of the damage.

A backpack swung past a rear quarter. A bike leaned against a door. A child's door opened into the wall. A folded pram dragged along the bumper on the way out.

None of it is dramatic, none of it is on purpose, and all of it lands on the same few square centimetres, once or twice a week, for years.

The garage is not a safe place. It is just a private one.

The most aggressive thing on the road is often your own car.

Every tyre throws a mist of water, grit and grit-sized pieces of asphalt backwards along the rocker panel and up into the wheel arch. The lower doors and the trailing edge of the arch take that spray for the whole life of the car.

There is no impact to remember and no noise to explain. There is only the one part of the car that always looks slightly sandblasted when you get down on one knee.
