Starting a Manual Car - Gear Shifting, Clutch, and Race Pedal Explained Step by Step

Ensure the Car is in Neutral
Before starting, make sure the gear shift is in the Neutral position (gear stick should move freely).
Keep the parking brake engaged.

Depress the Clutch
Press the clutch pedal (leftmost pedal) fully with your left foot.

Turn the Ignition
Insert the key and turn it to start the engine while keeping the clutch fully pressed down.
Once the engine starts, you can let go of the key, but keep the clutch pedal pressed.

Shift into 1st Gear
While holding the clutch down, move the gear stick into 1st gear.
1st gear is usually in the upper-left position on the gear shift.

Release the Parking Brake
Slowly release the parking brake while keeping the clutch fully pressed and the car in 1st gear.

Slowly Release the Clutch and Apply the Accelerator (Race Pedal)
Gradually release the clutch pedal with your left foot until you feel the car start to move (this is called the biting point).
At the same time, gently press the race (accelerator) pedal with your right foot to give the engine some power.
