BACK TO SCHOOK CAR SAFETY CHECK LIST
Safety on the road seems like a no-brainer. Your car may have been sitting more this summer than normal but when school rolls around, you want to make sure it's safe for the road. Now is the right time to check out your vehicle.
1. Even if you haven't driven your car as much this spring and summer, it's still important to have the oil changed and fluids topped up. Short trips where the engine doesn't have time to properly heat up can cause condensation in the oil among other problems. This will turn your oil into sludge resulting in engine failure.
2. Routinely check your tires to make sure they are properly inflated and still have enough tread to allow you to stop as quickly. Insert the edge of a Canadian dime with the Queen going in headfirst. If the Queen’s head is covered by the tread you have lots of tire life left. However, if the top of her head is visible at any location on the tire, the tire is worn out and it’s time to replace it.
3. Brakes and calipers can seize if the car has been sitting for long periods of time. Routinely request your brakes to be checked.
4. Many people think that batteries fail during the cold weather. However, the heat from the summer causes more batteries to fail and lose power than cold winters. Have your battery tested to make sure it's working to full power.
5. Keep your distance from cars ahead. The roads are going to be a lot busier and patience will run thin, but tailgating has no positive outcomes and certainly won’t get you to your destination any faster.
6. It's important to be on-time, but if you're running late, try to keep it in perspective. Avoid speeding, to insure the safety of those in your vehicle.
