The firefighter turnout jacket, one of the most important pieces of personal protective equipment on the fireground! π§βπ
Modern turnout jackets are made up of three main layers:
π₯ 1. Outer Shell β Protects against flames, heat, cuts, and abrasion.
π§ 2. Moisture Barrier β Helps keep water, blood, chemicals, and other contaminants from reaching the firefighter.
π§₯ 3. Thermal Liner β Provides insulation and helps slow heat transfer to the body.
The turnout jacket has evolved significantly over the years. Early firefighters often fought fires wearing wool coats, rubber rain gear, and little protection from heat. Advances in materials and safety standards have led to the modern turnout jacket, which provides far greater protection against the hazards firefighters face today.
Together, these layers work as a system to protect firefighters from many of the dangers encountered on emergency scenes. While turnout gear provides critical protection, it is designed to reduce risk, not eliminate it. Prolonged exposure to heat can still cause burns and heat stress.
