🛑 BRAKES 101: What Actually Happens When You Step on the Brake Pedal?
Your brakes make stopping a 4,000+ lb vehicle feel pretty simple, but there’s a lot happening between your foot and the road!
When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure sends brake fluid through the system. That pressure activates the brake calipers, which squeeze the brake pads against the rotors. The resulting friction slows the wheels and brings your vehicle to a stop.
Simple idea. Very important hardware. 🔧
So what do we check during a brake inspection?
🔍 Brake Pads – We check how much friction material remains and look for uneven or abnormal wear.
🔍 Brake Rotors – We inspect the rotors for excessive wear, scoring, rust, heat damage or warping.
🔍 Brake Calipers – We make sure the calipers are operating properly and aren't sticking, seized or leaking.
🔍 Brake Fluid – We check the fluid level and condition and look for signs of leaks in the hydraulic system.
🔍 Brake Lines & Hoses – We inspect for corrosion, cracking, deterioration and leaks.
🔍 Parking Brake – We check that the parking brake engages and releases properly.
⚠️ Watch for the warning signs: squealing or grinding noises, vibration when braking, a soft or spongy pedal, pulling to one side, or needing more distance than usual to stop.
Your brakes don't usually go from "perfect" to "problem" overnight. Regular inspections can catch wear before it becomes a more expensive repair or a safety concern.
