🚗 The used car feature check most buyers never do, even when they specifically want the feature.

Auto dimming rearview mirrors are one of those convenience features that make a real difference on the road. Automatic glare reduction from headlights behind you, safer night driving, and reduced eye strain on long trips. Most modern luxury vehicles and mid to high trims include them. Many entry level trims do not.

The problem for used car buyers is that trim confusion is real. A vehicle listed as a specific trim may or may not have every feature that trim typically includes, depending on optional packages, manufacturer changes across model years, or dealer installed accessories. Auto dimming mirrors are commonly assumed to be present when they are not.

Verifying takes seconds:

🔍 Visual identification of the specific mirror hardware and sensor location
🔍 Interior mirror housing style and mounting differences between auto dimming and standard units
🔍 A quick functional test to confirm the feature actually engages under the right conditions

🔧 2017 BMW 230i pre purchase inspection snapshot. A quick walkthrough of what we look for on this specific model during a used inspection.

The 2 Series is one of the most compelling used BMWs on the Canadian market. Rear wheel drive dynamics, turbocharged inline four power, compact and engaging chassis, and pricing well below the 3 Series and 4 Series while delivering much of the same driving character.

Here is what we covered on this 230i:

🔑 BMW key replacement cost. Around $500 plus tax at the dealer, and that assumes standard programming turnaround. 🔦 Everyone knows to check the headlights on a used car. Very few know how to verify they are the original undamaged factory parts.

That gap matters. A replaced headlight on a 2021 or newer vehicle almost always signals one of two things:

🔴 A front end collision that was repaired
🔴 A separate impact or damage event that required replacement

Either way, it is information the seller may not volunteer and the vehicle history report may not capture. And on a newer used vehicle where the buyer is paying near new pricing, verifying original OEM parts is one of the highest value checks that can be done during inspection.

What we look for during inspection:

✅ Manufacturing date stamps on the headlight units compared to the vehicle build date
✅ OEM part numbers and manufacturer markings that should match factory specification
✅ Consistent fit, finish, and condition between the left and right units
✅ Housing clarity and yellowing patterns consistent with the age of the vehicle
✅ Original attachment hardware showing factory installation, not aftermarket work

Any inconsistency across these points is a strong signal that at least one headlight has been replaced. And a replaced headlight is a starting point for deeper investigation, not the end of the conversation.

🔑 Mazda owners, check your spare key today. This is one of those small things that becomes a big problem at exactly the wrong moment.

Many Mazda spare keys are delivered from the dealer as uncut blanks. The electronic fob works normally. You can lock and unlock the car remotely with it. It looks like a functional key.

But the physical blade has not been cut. Which means the spare will not:

🔴 Turn in the ignition if the fob battery dies
🔴 Unlock the door manually if the electronics fail
🔴 Open the trunk lock in emergencies
🔴 Serve any of the backup purposes a spare key is supposed to serve

Most owners never notice until the day they actually need the spare. And by then, they are dealing with a locked out situation, a dead fob, or a lost primary key, in a moment where "I will get to it later" is no longer an option.

The check takes seconds. Compare your spare key blade to your primary key blade. If the spare looks smooth or blank rather than cut with grooves, take it to a Mazda dealer or a licensed key cutter. Getting the blade cut is usually inexpensive and takes minutes.

We recently inspected a vehicle wearing brand new Pirelli P Zero tires with a 2024 manufacture date and barely any wear. On the surface, that looks like exactly what any buyer wants to see. Fresh rubber. Premium brand. Low wear. Ready to go.

But experienced inspectors know that fresh premium tires on a used car can tell two very different stories:

✅ Genuine ownership investment by a diligent previous owner
🚨 A strategic pre sale freshening designed to disguise deferred maintenance elsewhere, or hide alignment and suspension issues that would have been obvious on worn tires

The tires themselves are only part of the assessment. What else the tires might be covering up is where the real story lives:

We see two mistakes constantly during inspections:
