Another vehicle back on the road, another Main Quest completed!

Customer reached out needing a rear wheel bearing replaced. Got everything quoted up, found the bearing available in town, customer approved the quote, so we grabbed the part and headed over.

Showed up at the job site and started asking the normal questions before we got too deep into the meat and potatoes of her.

“What makes you think it needs a wheel bearing?”

“I was told if I can feel heat coming from the center here, where the bearing is, then I need a wheel bearing.”

Well... that's a new one for the diagnostic handbook.

“You hear any growling or humming that gets louder with speed?”

Nope.

“Any play in the bearing that another mechanic found?”

Nope.

Alright then. Before we fire up the ol' parts cannon and replace a bearing just because it was invited to the party, let's get the jack out and see what the vehicle actually has to say.

Jacked up the rear end and started at the left rear.

And when I tell you that wheel was locked on...

She was LOCKED.

Couldn't budge that tire if you put your lunch into it. I'm surprised it was still driving around instead of dragging that tire behind it like a limp leg.

Walked around to the right rear and gave that one a spin.

Smooth as butter.

Free as a bird.

Doing all the normal wheel things a wheel should generally be doing.

Well sir, we've got some good news and some bad news.

Good news: you don't need a wheel bearing.

Bad news: you definitely need a caliper.

That bearing was innocent. Wrong place, wrong time, falsely accused.

We gave the pads and rotor a good inspection too, just to see how much damage the seized caliper had managed to do. Luckily, we caught this one soon enough. Pads still had plenty of life left, rotor was still in good shape and she hadn't gotten hot enough to let all the smoke and ghosts out of the brake pads yet.

No blue rotor, no cooked pads and no need to turn one problem into three. We'll take that as a win.

Called up the parts store.

“Yup, we've got one.”

Music to a mobile mechanic's ears.

Customer was happy with the price, so off we went again. Returned the wheel bearing, grabbed the caliper we actually needed and headed back to finish the Main Quest.

Got the seized caliper off, new one installed and brakes bled out.

Moment of truth.

Gave the tire a spin and would ya look at that...

She does wheel things again!

Spinning nice and freely with no brake dragging.

Sometimes diagnosing a vehicle is complicated.

Sometimes you jack it up, spin one tire, attempt to spin the other and the vehicle practically points at the problem and says, “It's this one, boss.”

That's exactly why we like to verify the problem before replacing parts. Just because someone told you that you need something doesn't necessarily mean that's what's actually wrong.

A few questions and a couple minutes of checking saved the customer from paying to replace a perfectly good wheel bearing while leaving the actual problem untouched.

No parts cannon required today.

Another vehicle back on the road, another happy customer and another Main Quest crossed off the list.

Thanks again to everyone who's been reaching out, booking appointments, recommending us to friends, family and neighbours and keeping these Main Quests coming. Every message and recommendation helps keep this little mobile operation rolling.

We got some catching up to do!

Someone's been sleeping on the Main Quest posts, boys. Telling ya, you guys have been keeping a fella busy!

First Main Quest for today was a 2020 Ford Escape for front and rear pads and rotors.

For the most part, everything decided to play ball. Parts fit, everything came apart nicely, and nobody was questioning their life choices first thing in the morning.
The rear caliper bracket bolts did decide they weren't leaving without a fight. Worked them back and forth, little by little, until they finally accepted defeat and came out.
Got everything cleaned up, l**ed where it needed to be and fresh pads and rotors installed all the way around. Trusty scan tool had to make an appearance to put the electronic parking brake in
to service mode and back out again.
Everything back together, working as it should, and a pretty easy way to start the morning.
Can't complain when the first Main Quest doesn't immediately unlock three Side Quests.

Next victim was a 2017 Kia Sportage. Customer reached out looking for front pads and rotors, got everything priced up and off we went.
Started tearing it down and, as always, verified our new parts before getting too committed.
Good thing we did.
New rotors were too big.
Apparently the parts catalogue decided we needed a little adventure today.
Called around, tracked down the correct rotors, went and picked them up and headed back to our work site to finish what we started.
While we were there, the customer added a couple Side Quests.
First up, the lower bumper lip was hanging down and needed a little attention.
Second, she had been told at her last oil change that her oil pan was cracked and leaking oil.
Well, that sounds important.
With the Sportage already in the air, we crawled underneath and had a good look around.
Dry as a bone.
No oil leaking. No obvious damage. Nothing that backed up what she'd been told.
While looking at oil pan found serpentine belt was excessively cracking other than that all good.
Sometimes the best repair is finding out you don't actually need one.
Got a couple zip ties out, secured the bumper lip back where it belonged, finished up the front brakes and took her for a test drive.
Everything felt good and she was ready to rock again.

Last Main Quest of the day was a 2022 Chevy Trailblazer for a suspension inspection.
Customer told us another shop had quoted her $2,500 for rear shocks.
Yup.
You read that right.
Twenty-five hundred dollars.
For rear shocks.
Needless to say, we were curious to see what exactly was happening underneath this thing.
Got there, found today's final victim and started with the front end. Jacked her up, checked everything over and found no play in the suspension or steering components and no obvious leaks.
Moved onto the rear and started inspecting those apparently gold-plated, hand-crafted, $2,500 rear shocks.
And there it was.
Undercoating.
Not leaking shocks.
Undercoating.
The customer then remembered she'd previously had the vehicle undercoated, which explained exactly what we were looking at.
That's why an inspection and a second opinion can sometimes save you a whole lot of money. We were able to reassure the customer that everything checked out and there was no reason based on our inspection to start throwing thousands of dollars at the rear suspension.

Another day in the books. Couple vehicles fixed up, another inspected and reassured, a few Side Quests handled along the way, and everyone's ready for their next adventures.

Thanks again to everyone who's been reaching out, booking work, recommending us to friends and family and keeping this fella busy enough that he's falling behind on his Main Quest posts!

Another main quest in the books!

Had a lady reach out over the weekend after her window decided it no longer wanted to be part of the door and dropped down inside.
After talking with a mechanic friend, she had come to the conclusion that the window regulator had failed. We called around to a few parts stores looking for a replacement and, naturally, nobody had one in stock. The ones we could get weren't exactly easy on the wallet either.
Did a little hunting, found a good used regulator, got the customer all priced up and off we went.

Picked up the part and made the trip to Oromocto to find tonight's victim.

Got there and the customer had done a pretty respectable tape job keeping the window up and the rain outside where it belongs. The door panel was already removed too, so somebody had already opened the gates and saved us a little work.

Got right into the meat and potatoes of her. Removed the window, pulled the old regulator out and gave the replacement used regulator a little l**e before running it through its motions to make sure everything moved nice and smooth.
No sense installing a used part just to find out you've purchased someone else's problem.

Everything checked out, so we slammed her in, bolted the window back onto the regulator and got everything where it belonged.
Hit the switch... Window goes down. Window goes back up. What more can a fella ask for, it's nice when a window regulator remembers its entire job description is literally just up and down.

Sometimes you spend an evening chasing electrical gremlins and fighting seized bolts. Other nights you push a button, the window does window things, and you pack up the tools before the vehicle has a chance to unlock a Side Quest.

Customer was happy to have a working window again, and that's another Main Quest crossed off the list!

Thanks again to everyone reaching out, messaging us, recommending us and continuing to support what we're doing. Without you guys, we wouldn't have all these Main Quests to keep us busy.

Need something repaired, diagnosed or just want someone to take a look?

Message us today, get a quote for your required repair and you might just be part of our next Main Quest!

Hope everyone had a great weekend! We've got a couple Main Quests to catch up on.

Starting the weekend off, we packed up the tools and made the trip to McAdam for front and rear pads and rotors on a Hyundai Elantra that was in dire need of some good brakes.
Everything went almost perfectly. We did find a couple things the customer is going to want to address sooner rather than later, but nothing stopping us from getting the job at hand finished.
Got fresh pads and rotors on all four corners, everything back together and got the Elantra stopping nice and smooth again.

The rain decided it wanted to be part of the business this weekend too. It shuffled the schedule around a little bit, but we moved some appointments around and managed to get everyone taken care of.

Monday morning rolled around and first victim of the day was a Ford F-150 for rear pads and rotors.
And surprisingly... Nothing seized. Nothing broke.
Nothing required words that can't be repeated in front of children.
Even the rotors came off after a few convincing hits from the trusty ol' swing press.
That's right the hammer. The original cordless impact.
Got everything cleaned up, new rear brakes installed and back together.
I'd say the best part of the truck is officially the rear brakes now.
She's a little rough around the edges, but she's an ol' work truck. Doesn't need to win a beauty pageant — just needs to show up Monday morning and earn her keep.
Got him all sorted, another happy customer, and off we went to what we thought was our final Main Quest of the day.

Key words: we thought.

Next up was a 2012 Dodge Caravan.
Customer states: battery light is on, install alternator.
Perfect. Alternator job, get her changed out and carry on with the day.
Apparently the Caravan hadn't received that memo.
While replacing the alternator, we discovered the belt tensioner was seized.
And not "give it a little persuasion" seized.
This thing was seized tighter than a jar of pickles after your grandmother gets done with the lid.
She wasn't moving.
Luckily, the customer already had a new belt, so we started figuring out our next move.
Called up a buddy who runs a scrapyard. "Yup, got one here."
And just like that... Side Quest unlocked: Junkyard Edition.
Got the alternator swapped out, packed up and headed to the scrapyard to do a little parts shopping. Found ourselves a good used tensioner that actually remembered it was supposed to move and headed back to the customer.
Got the replacement tensioner installed, new belt on and everything finished up.
Went for a test drive with the customer while monitoring live data with the scan tool. Charging voltage was holding exactly where it should, battery light stayed off and the van was officially back in business.
Customer was happy because after dealing with this problem, he can finally get back to driving his van again.

You'd think that would be the end of the day.
Nope.
While we were running around, a lady reached out about a parking brake issue on her Ford Edge. We still had a little daylight and a little ambition left before calling her quits, so we headed over to take a look.
Initially it looked like the connector wasn't fully seated. Put a little l**e on it, got it clicked in properly and tried again.
Still had a left rear parking brake motor fault.
Alright, time to dig a little deeper.
Pulled the connector back apart, inspected the terminals and found they had been bent open and weren't making a proper connection.
And while we were doing all this with the key on, the battery decided it had contributed enough to today's activities and clocked out. Dead.
Got the Edge jump-started and running again. We'll get the customer quoted on a battery and a new connector, get those problems sorted out and take another swing at the parking brake issue.

Sometimes you finish a Main Quest.
Sometimes you unlock a Side Quest.
And sometimes the Side Quest unlocks another Side Quest while you're still working on the first one.

That's it for this weekend!

We've got a couple jobs lined up for this week, but we're keeping the schedule fairly light. This fella has a project of his own that's been patiently waiting for some attention, and it needs to get handled before we're away again next weekend.

Thanks again to everyone who's been reaching out, booking appointments, recommending us to friends and family and continuing to use our service. Every message, recommendation and repeat customer helps keep this little mobile operation rolling.

We're back at it like a crack addict!

Another evening, another couple Main Quests on the board. Tonight we had a 2017 Honda Civic in for a grille swap, followed by a 2015 Volkswagen Passat needing rear brakes before a pretty important road trip.

First up, the Civic!
The customer reached out looking to get her grille swapped, so we got everything quoted, parts figured out and scheduled her in.
Today was the day to give the ol' Civic a little facelift.
Got into removing the front bumper cover and, by some sort of automotive miracle, most of the plastic clips actually came apart without immediately disintegrating the second you looked at them wrong.
Anyone who's worked with old plastic clips knows that's a victory worth mentioning.
Got all the bolts and clips out, slid the bumper cover off, unbolted the old grille and got the new one fitted into place.
Everything lined up nicely, bumper went back on without putting up much of a fight, and the finished product turned out sharp!
It's crazy how changing one piece can completely freshen up the front of a car. Same Civic, just showed up to work Monday morning with a fresh haircut and a little more confidence.
Customer was happy, Civic was looking sharp, tools were packed up and we were off to our final Main Quest of the evening.

Next victim: a 2015 Volkswagen Passat needing rear brakes.

The customer reached out this morning because she needed them replaced before heading off to Ontario for university the following day.
Her boyfriend had taken a crack at them the night before but was having a hard time and was missing a couple of the key tools that make the difference between "this shouldn't take long" and three hours of questioning every decision you've ever made.
Nothing wrong with knowing when to call in reinforcements!
She got all the parts figured out and we showed up to finish the battle.
Got everything apart, rear brakes swapped out, everything serviced and put back together where it belonged.

Another Main Quest complete and, more importantly, another customer ready for the drive to Ontario with one less thing to worry about.

Sometimes we're diagnosing electrical problems. Sometimes we're chasing noises. Sometimes we're replacing brakes.
And sometimes we're just giving a Civic a fresh haircut.
Either way, we're back at it tomorrow!

Thanks again to everyone who's been reaching out, booking appointments, sharing our name with neighbours and recommending us to friends and family. Word of mouth has been a huge part of keeping this little operation moving, and we appreciate every single person who's helped spread the word.

Need something looked at, diagnosed or repaired without the hassle of dropping your vehicle off at a shop? Send us a message and we'll see what we can do.

Another evening wrenching completed, another couple cars fixed up and another diagnosed for the next stage!

First victim of the night was a 2010 Audi Q7 for customer-supplied front pads and rotors.

Got into the job and noticed the passenger front CV shaft boot was torn and starting to sling grease around. Let the customer know what we found so it can be taken care of before the joint decides it's had enough and turns itself into another Main Quest.

Other than that, the old girl didn't put up much of a fight. Lucky us! Got the new pads and rotors installed, everything back together and she's stopping nice and smooth again like she should.

Main Quest complete.

But before we could head to our final job of the evening...

Side Quest unlocked!

The Audi customer had mentioned us to her neighbour, and while we were there he came over and mentioned his Hyundai Elantra had been making a chirping/squeaking noise whenever the engine was running.

Had a little time to spare, so no problem — let's take a gander and see what she'd be.

He'd previously taken the car to Canadian Tire, where they installed a new belt. Unfortunately, she was still chirping away like a high-school kid in the back of the bus.

He brought it back with the same complaint and was told the noise was coming from the aftermarket alternator.

That got me thinking...

If the aftermarket alternator is supposedly the problem, aren't we just going to replace it with... another aftermarket alternator?

Before loading up the parts cannon, let's have a look.

Got the car shut down and checked everything over. Sure enough, the belt was just a touch loose.

This Elantra doesn't use a spring-loaded or hydraulic belt tensioner. She's got the good old-fashioned manual adjustment setup.

Perfect.

Loosen this bolt, loosen that bolt, tighten this one and we should be outta here like a herd of turtles.

Got the tools back out, added a little more tension to the belt, fired her up and...

Quiet as a church mouse.

Sometimes the best diagnosis doesn't come with a parts list.

Side Quest complete!

Off we went to the final Main Quest of the evening: a 2010 Nissan Versa with a blower motor issue.

Did some digging and found the climate control switch has apparently seen enough ons and offs for one lifetime. The blower wants to work, but the switch now needs a little extra touching, pushing and convincing to keep everything activated.

She's basically at the stage where you have to hold your tongue just right to keep the fan blowing.

We know where the problem is now, so we'll get some parts figured out and get this one dialed back in on another evening.

Another night in the books. One set of brakes replaced, one CV boot caught before it becomes a bigger problem, one chirping Hyundai silenced without firing the parts cannon, and one Nissan diagnosed for its next Main Quest.

Thanks again to everyone who's been reaching out, telling their neighbours, recommending us to friends and family and keeping us busy. It means a lot seeing the word continue to spread!

Couple Main Quests to catch up on before we shut her down for the weekend!

We'll be away for the weekend, so any messages sent our way we'll get back to when we're back!

Now for Thursday's Main Quest, with an unexpected Side Quest thrown in.

We had a Ford Escape booked in for a rear sway bar link kit. Got to the job, took a look underneath and found the right rear link was already Bluetooth.

Completely gone.

Sweet, I thought. Half my job is already done for me!

Of course, the new link wasn't going to let us off quite that easy. The stud that bolts through the control arm was just a touch too long and wouldn't allow everything to slide into place.

Out came the trusty cutoff wheel. Gave the stud a little haircut, got everything fitting where it belonged and got the new links installed.

Customer arrived, job was completed, we had a few words about some future Main Quests the Escape is going to need, and we were off...

Or so we thought.

Luckily, before leaving Oromocto, we checked our messages. The customer had sent us one saying there was now a terrible noise coming from underneath the vehicle.

No problem. Turned ourselves around, met back up with him and went for a quick test drive.

Didn't even make it out of the parking lot.

You could hear something underneath trying its absolute hardest to leave the vehicle without giving two weeks' notice.

Crawled underneath and found our culprit: the driveshaft hanger bearing was completely worn out.

And when I say worn out, I mean there wasn't much left to identify. Bushing, bearing, hopes and dreams — all gone.

We explained what we found and recommended what needed to be done next. Since we were heading back toward Fredericton anyway, we gave the customer a ride back rather than leaving him sitting around waiting for someone to come get him.

Sometimes the Side Quest finds you.

For today's Main Quest, we had to finish up a Toyota RAV4 we'd been working on earlier in the week.

We had previously diagnosed both radiator fan motors as bad and got those replaced. While doing the repair, we found the passenger-side motor had gotten so hot when it failed that it actually melted the fan blade around the hub.

Can't exactly put that one back together and call her mint.

Got a good replacement fan blade today, got everything installed and fired up the trusty scan tool to verify the repair. Both fans are now working exactly as they should, and the A/C is back to blowing ice cold.

While we were in there, we noticed the high- and low-pressure A/C lines were touching and rubbing against each other like two teenagers at a school dance who hadn't discovered personal space yet.

Couldn't leave that alone.

Gave the lines a little "how ya doin'," made some room between them and made sure they weren't going to keep rubbing against each other until one eventually wore through and caused an A/C leak.

One vehicle fixed up and ready for its next adventure, another needing a few more repairs before its Main Quest is complete — but that's all part of it.

Thanks again to everyone who's been supporting us, reaching out, booking work and recommending us to others. We appreciate every bit of it.

We'll be shutting her down for the weekend and getting back to any messages when we're back.

Have a great weekend!

That's another evening in the books!

For tonight's Main Quest, we had a 2011 Ford F-150 back for some 4x4 repairs, with an unexpected side quest thrown in for good measure.

We had previously diagnosed the 4x4 system and found the driver's front hub actuator had called it quits. With one already gone, we recommended replacing both front actuators while we were into it.

Tonight was repair night!
Got both front hub actuators and wheel bearings replaced. Overall the job went pretty smooth for an old F-150. Nothing broke and nothing put up too serious of a fight, but we definitely had to get a few good swings in with the trusty BFH — Big Freaking Hammer. Sometimes you just gotta speak Ford’s preferred language.

The only thing trying to fight us was the rain.

Luckily we had some decent tree cover, stayed mostly dry and kept on trucking.

Got everything banged back together and headed out for a test drive to verify the repair. 4x4 engaged properly and both front wheels were locking in again.

Main Quest complete!

But apparently the F-150 had a side quest waiting for us.

Now we had a clunk coming from the front end.

Back underneath she went. Double-checked all of our work first and everything was good in the hood. Started checking the rest of the front end and noticed the sway bar bushings were starting to get tired.

Kept looking and there it was.

Right front lower ball joint.

Gave her the ol' wiggle wiggle and sure enough — nothing crazy, but just enough movement in that ball joint to make itself known and explain our clunk.
Double checked the drivers side and shes starting to have a little movement to it aswell.

Like I've always said, she'll let you know when she's ready to come apart!

Gave the customer another parts list to get ordered and we'll be back for round two to replace a few more front-end parts and get the ol' girl tightened back up again.

Sometimes you show up to finish one Main Quest and the vehicle unlocks another one before you can leave.

Keeps things interesting!

Thanks again to everyone who's been messaging, booking appointments, recommending us to friends and family and supporting what we're building. Every job, share and recommendation helps keep this little mobile operation rolling.

Couple more Main Quests completed today!

First up was pads and rotors all the way around on a Volkswagen Tiguan.

This one had an electronic parking brake, so the scan tool had to make an appearance to put everything into service mode and get those rear calipers retracted.

The customer mentioned he'd been hearing a grinding noise from the rear, and did he ever have a grinding noise!

Left rear wasn't too bad. Right rear though...

The brake pad was GONE.

Couldn't tell ya where she went, where she's been or what adventures she's been on, but one thing was certain — she wasn't in the caliper anymore!

Luckily we caught it before things got any worse. The caliper piston was still in good shape, wasn't leaking any brake fluid and retracted nice and smoothly.

Got fresh pads and rotors on all four corners, everything cleaned up and serviced properly, and got the old girl stopping on dimes again.

Next up, final Main Quest of the afternoon!

Front brakes on a Chevy Trailblazer.

Chevy apparently looked at the traditional idea of putting an electronic parking brake on the rear and said, "Nah, let's make this interesting."

Electronic parking brake on the FRONT calipers!

So out came the trusty scan tool again, got everything commanded back where it needed to be and got the front brakes changed out.

Back together, brakes working great and back to the races...

Or so we thought.

Turns out she's going to need rear brakes too!

But that's a problem for another day and another Main Quest. Can't complete all the side quests in one afternoon!

Another couple vehicles taken care of and another Saturday in the books.

Huge thanks to everyone who's been messaging, booking appointments, recommending us to friends and family, sharing the page and supporting what we're building. It really does go a long way and keeps this little mobile operation rolling!

Need some work done but don't want the hassle of dropping your vehicle off at a shop and figuring out a ride?

That's where we come in.
