π The ECU Is Managing Power β Not Just Making It
A common misconception is that if boost reaches the target, the engine must be making all the power it's capable of.
In reality, modern ECUs are constantly balancing performance, reliability, and component protection. Even with boost on target, the ECU may reduce torque or power because of factors such as:
Ignition timing being reduced due to knock activity
Torque management strategies limiting output
Fueling adjustments for engine protection
High intake or coolant temperatures
Airflow limitations
Driver demand or throttle intervention
This is why a datalog is one of the most valuable diagnostic tools available. It shows what the ECU is commanding and why, allowing you to identify the actual limiting factor instead of replacing parts based on guesswork.
A structured log review can often reveal issues that aren't obvious from a boost gauge or a single sensor reading.
