True North Cycles

True North Cycles Custom handmade steel and titanium bicycles for various styles of riding ranging from touring to road to mountain.

True North Cycles was founded in 1993 when Hugh Black started building frames in the workshop of his parents’ farm near Alma, Ontario, Canada. Hugh’s dedication to custom-frame building was tested and proven in the early years: the workshop was heated by a woodstove, and Hugh had to repeatedly collect firewood to keep warm to work! Most of the early frames that Hugh designed and handcrafted were m

ountain bikes, but he steadily expanded his repertoire over time to include frames for other types of cycling.

"The Kracken" powder paint from prismatic powders. Awesome looking affect with rainbow glitter, hammertone texture and a blue/teale colour. I don't use hammertone finish on my frames very often but maybe I should.
This is a squid frame that came I. For someods including the sliding discoint which was a head scratcher. I don't think I've seen this style before, may be a first?

This is Mike's new titanium fatbike frameset. Mike rides a lot and I would say his bike is his passion. I built him a similar frameset 2 years ago which was good. However, he wanted to improve on that design so we reworked the front triangle with different geometry earlier this year ( reworked= cut off and welded up a new one). Still not 100% happy with the result he decided to start fresh and have me build him round 3. Mike is quite tall and rides very challenging terrain very quickly. Every detail on this frame has been obsessively scrutinized to come up with hopefully the best performance yet. There are a couple of nice photos of his first fatbike on his local trails.

Congratulations to Mercedes on her completion of her Great Divide Mountain tour. We have been discussing her trip and new bike for almost a year now. This is the first bike I have built with the pinion smart shift gearbox. It worked like a charm! She has a touring bike with the normal pinion gearbox and has loved it. We thought the smart shift might help with gear shifting on the steeper climbs.

This is Joe and Melinda's touring tandem. It has seen many adventures and was due for a parts refresh. Gone are the cabled derailleurs and mechanical disc brakes and dropbar. It has a sram axs wireless rear derailleur and new hydraulic disc brakes. The new wheels have as much Canadian content as possible with hubs and carbon rims.

HAPPY 2024 Everyone! Lots happening at the True North / Bicycle Tailor workshop today. Mike is starting assembly on the Cranwell's custom titanium coupled tandem. I am looking forward to seeing this built up. Another True North pinion drive commuter bike is starting to take shape in the frame jig.

This turned out extremely well. I don't think it is going to fit under the tree though. This is Michael and Monica's new coupled titanium tandem. More pics to come of the full build. Definitely a dream bike for those into tandems.

I can't wait to see this one built. This is Tex's 2nd True North. This one will see duty in the Tour Divide race next summer. The frame is built for a pinion gearbox and belt drive. The custom titanium fork will keep things on the right track. I went a little crazy on the leaf anodizing and I think it looks great.
