Tune Progress...

I just thought I'd make a quick update that behind the scenes there is still work going on with the tune. There isn't much to report because I have to think about everything, stare at the numbers for a while, bother Bodie Sumption-Hall for a month straight about my ideas, change my mind, then rinse and repeat.

I've put combustion waveform mapping on the back burner for a while. That project has turned out to be very good at thinning out the company wallet. It's going to get rolled into the race car project. Thus this is an announcement of an announcement!

Meet my new friend Blocky!

Well, the scan of the block came out decent for mockups, but there is around 4mm of drift so my OCD is pushing me to take the scan again.

Now, here is a question... I think it's possible to save this engine but it would have to be a long term project.

Should I try to save this engine?

Painted the block so it would be easier to scan!

Got the block scanned today, but haven't stitched the scans together yet.

Deep into the boring stuff.

Reverse engineering the J1939 messages is quite a slog. I see why it's so robust, but also why when it breaks, it really breaks.

Listening as a silent observer is pretty straight forward. Getting the network to recognize a device, starts with it ... basically putting a hand up. Every so often the ecm will call out and ask who is on the network. Every device on the network must respond or the ecm will assume that device is no longer active.

If a device is no longer marked as active any messages it sends out will be ignored. It must claim an address every time the ecm asks for it.

I used to write about things like this on the titanxdforums, but since I've moved my journey to facebook I've got to do a better job on these updates. Even when they're for the boring, mundane and slow aspects of my development process.

How does the time keep getting away from me?

Well I now have my Okama Gamesphere working again! I made a lot of mistakes and had to go back to my first prototype board... burned out another Adafruit CAN M4 back feeding 12v to it.

I use remote connection to my threadripper which I've installed calterm onto, so now I can communicate with the bench ecm while watching the j1939 network with my ... half baked software!

Put the other ecm into storage for the time being. It has valuable information on it as it's the ecm that came from the engine with the split crank. So special thanks to Bodie Sumption-Hall who hooked me up with his spare ecm so I could put the other one into storage.

I wish I could move faster on some of this stuff but I'm starting to hit the wall in terms of available resources. This year hasn't been as good for sales and I'm spending more on R&D. Just how it goes sometimes!

Well I managed to get over myself and fix the mistakes I made. I don't really know what I was going for with the board wiring to the connector... I really don't.

Now I have to update my wiring diagram with the changes I've made, and start putting together the code for this arrangement.

Order of projects:

-This board
-J1939 comms
-Sensor duplication
-Reassemble precious
-???
-Profit.

Video editing takes forever and I hate the sound of my voice. Please note there is extreme levels of procrastination being applied to editing and posting my preliminary findings from the engine tear down.

My lifting eye wasn’t done in time but I have the engine now!

I took the valve cover off to have a peak-a-boo. This was a very well loved engine, absolute shame that it let go.

It will go to good use fuelling my obsession with the ISV and the Titan.

Someone not far from me gave me a deal I couldn't resist on a long block...

So I had to design a lifting plate. I'll send out the dxf and see if I can get it done before the engine shows up.

You know, it might be better if I stay away from CAD and 3D scans.

That's true, parallel twins. With room to spare in the valley. The exhaust note would be just amazing.

We'll just ignore how much this would cost to make happen...

Started to build the new board… and made some mistakes. I haven’t ever been successful removing soldered on components. I was hoping I wouldn’t make mistakes with the schematic right there… but… I did.

I had a breadboard but it was just garbage. I guess I need a good one because it probably makes more sense at this point to test, design and have a custom board made so I don’t make these kinds of mistakes.

sigh.
