The question that I always receive at my workshop
(DOES AC CONSUME MORE FUEL)" — a car does consume more fuel when the AC is on 🚗❄️
Here’s why:
1. The AC uses engine power
The air-conditioning system has a compressor that is powered by the engine. When you switch on the AC:
The engine has to work harder
More fuel is burned to provide that extra power
2. How much extra fuel?
It depends on the car and driving conditions, but typically:
5% to 10% more fuel during normal driving
Up to 15% more in city traffic where the engine works harder
3. When the difference is most noticeable
Fuel consumption increases more when:
You are driving slowly in traffic
The AC is set to very cold
The weather is very hot
The car engine is small or older
