Diagnosing Towing Issues

A couple of weeks ago a customer phoned to say he had just purchased a second hand caravan and it did not tow very well. So we made a booking to check it out. Both car and van was loaded as they would be for going on a trip away.

On weighing the van, it was clear by the individual scale readings there was certainly an issue. The front axle was carrying 2161kgs and the rear axle 991kgs. A huge difference!! The tow ball mass was low as well.

As a qualified mechanic, I have an eye for finding vehicle defects. I crawled under the van for an inspection. It wasn't long before I discovered that the suspension had different size coil springs fitted to the front and rear.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and I have just reweighed the same caravan after the fitment of the correct front coil springs. The weights across all four wheels are very much even now and the tow ball mass has greatly improved.

This highlights the importance of using a professional weighing company with mechanical experience to weigh your vehicle for safe load distribution. This would never have been discovered by going to a weighbridge. Individual wheel and axle numbers are so important.

It's not everyday you get to weigh a fighter jet (or a bit of it anyway!).
The Qld Air Museum needed to know the weight of this Sea Vixen cockpit on its frame for a new trailer being built to transport it.

If you like aircraft then I would highly recommend a visit to the museum in Caloundra. It's rammed packed with lots of interesting planes and helicopters.

Ford Ranger Super Duty - How do the ratings stack up?

So today I had the pleasure of weighing a very impressive ute and van combination. The Ford Ranger Super Duty has some substantial ratings straight out of the factory. A GVM of 4500kgs, front axle rating 1900kgs, rear axle rating 2800kgs, 4500kgs towing capacity with an 8000kgs GCM.

So how did Leon and Fiona's rig do? With their kind permission I can share the results.

As you can see from the photos they have a chassis mount canopy on the Ranger. Their caravan has an ATM of 4000kgs.

Results:
With the caravan attached (with a tow ball mass of 281kgs), the GVM was 3854kgs. The rear axle came in at 2438kgs. 😀
The caravan weighed in at 3433kgs 😀😀
The GCM came to 7004kgs 😀😀😀

That's 996kgs of payload left to potentially divide between the car and caravan. Now of course you have to remember not to overload that rear axle as you add weight, but for Leon & Fiona, they had everything loaded that they would need. A fantastic result.

I think this is going to be a very popular towing car and would be ideal for caravans weighing 4000kgs. I think 4500kgs might be a bit of a stretch. It will be interesting to see what GVM/GCM upgrades will be developed for the Super Duty, but for straight off the shelf figures, this is pretty good. Let's hope the other manufacturers catch up soon.

The Harvok caravan is super impressive as well. Cruisemaster ATX suspension, 48 volt electrical system and a monocoque body to name some of its features.

Take this fantastic rig. A RAM 2500 (Yellowstone edition) and a Noosa Cat boat. All weights were perfect. However something didn’t look right. The 4000kgs ATM trailer had been fitted with 2500kgs safety chains.
Obviously not compliant and the customer will be making a phone call to the dealer very soon!
