Addressing Current Events in the Gold Coast Suspension Community

Hey everyone,

I want to take a moment to address the growing concerns and discussions surrounding some suspension shops here on the Gold Coast. Over the years, I’ve seen and heard about practices that go against everything I stand for. I’m extremely happy to FINALLY see these businesses being exposed and called out online, and I feel it’s important to assure you of the standards we proudly maintain at our workshop.

There are shops out there that have been cutting corners for years. They hire underqualified “fitters/installers,” such as people with minimal training from tiny TAFE courses (if they even have that), instead of fully qualified mechanics. Worse still, they omit key components from lift kits to make their quotes appear cheaper and beat competitors. Customers believe they’re getting the same product and service as elsewhere, but in reality, they’re not. This kind of practice devalues the industry and puts vehicles—and potentially their owners’ safety—at risk!

Let me be clear: We despise these practices and hold ourselves to MUCH higher standards.

I run a small, local business on the Gold Coast—not a big Australia-wide dealership. I’m not in this to churn out jobs or compete on who can cut the most corners. I started this business because I love 4WDs. I live and breathe them. When you walk into my workshop, you’ll see my personal ute parked out front, still covered in dirt or sand from the previous weekend’s adventures. This is my passion.

That’s why every build we do is treated with the same care, precision, and respect that I’d give my own vehicle. We follow all Australian-recommended installation practices to the letter, even if it takes significantly more time and effort.

These are not steps we take lightly, nor are they shortcuts we’re willing to skip. Doing the job right takes time and costs more, but it’s worth it to deliver the quality and safety our customers deserve.

For years, we’ve proactively spent more money and time on each job than many of our competitors. While I’m extremely proud of the high-quality work we do, I’ll admit it’s been frustrating watching other shops undercut businesses like mine by taking shortcuts and deceiving customers. That said, I’m extremely happy to see these shady practices and businesses finally being exposed online. It’s time for the industry to be held accountable!

Suspension work is an optional upgrade, it’s something people do because they want to enhance their pride and joy, not because they have to. I will never forget that, and it’s why I approach every build with such care. I believe in the saying, “A poor man pays twice.” Cutting corners may seem cheaper in the short term, but it’ll cost more in the long run.

To those of you who’ve supported my workshop over the years, thank you. Your trust means everything to me. I’ll continue to do what I’ve always done: offer great, fair prices, 100% commitment to high-quality workmanship, and treat your vehicle like it’s my own. I’ll always take the time to do the job right and ensure every build is as safe and functional as possible.

**Lifting Your Toyota Hilux: What You Need to Know**

Today, let's delve into lifting Toyota Hilux models, whether it's an N70 or N80. The suspension setup is quite similar between these models, especially in the front. Toyota's mantra is "don't fix what isn't broken," but let's set some reasonable expectations about lifting your Toyota Hilux.

**Front End Sagging Issue:**
One noticeable aspect is how high these Hilux models appear post lift kit install, often closer to 3 inches or even 3 and a 1/2 inches. However, this isn't magic; it's linked to a well-known issue in the Hilux community—aggressive front-end sagging straight from the factory floor. Owners have reported losses of up to an inch off the original ride height within just a year, and this can be more significant if there's an aftermarket or genuine bull bar installed.

**The Lift Kit Effect:**
When lifting an N70/N80 that's been around for a decade with a bull bar for half of its life and factory suspension, extreme front-end sag is common. A 2-inch lift kit aims to rectify this, lifting your Hilux 2 inches higher than its factory height. Due to existing sag, this can result in a perceived increase of 60 to 75 millimeters. While it might seem like a 3-inch lift, it's primarily due to addressing the initial sag.

**The Benefits of Upper Control Arms:**
Now, do you need upper control arms with your lift? Yes, they are highly recommended whenever your budget allows. While they're not a deal-breaker if you can't afford them, they play a crucial role. Achieving camber alignment post-lift, especially with larger tryes, becomes nearly impossible without them. Additionally, without proper upper control arms, the lifted vehicle can lead to interference and potential damage to both the control arms and raised front coils.

In conclusion, if you're considering lifting your Hilux, budgeting for extended upper control arms is essential. Remember though, not all upgraded upper control arms are equal, so choose wisely for a smoother and safer lift experience.

**Improving Drivability: Key Considerations for Lifting Late Model 4WD Vehicles**

Today, let's once again delve into the ongoing discussion surrounding the challenge of maintaining drivability in late-model 4WDS after installing a lift kit. Drivability is paramount to us at Mechanic Near Me 4WD Specialists. We not only ensure that our lifts achieve the promised heights for our customers' vehicles but also prioritize enhancing comfort and drivability compared to factory standards.

In truth, most late-model suspensions are fairly average these days. I believe that previous generations of 4WD vehicles, particularly those pre-2020, had superior suspension compared to many of today's models. Therefore, improving comfort and driving experience as part of a lift is something we highly value.

This philosophy guides our approach to recommending lifts and suspensions. We focus on solutions that genuinely improve the driving dynamics of these vehicles. Unfortunately, the suspension industry is rife with misinformation, often perpetuated by die-hard fans of certain brands who overlook collective data to defend their preferred kits. At Mechanic Near Me, we rely on data and experience to discern which kits truly enhance the driving experience.

Quality matters greatly in suspension choices. A good-quality twin-tube shock, for example, can be MUCH more comfortable than a cheap mono-tube shock and vis versa. Both types serve their purposes based on driving preferences and vehicle stability requirements.

Spring rates are another crucial factor that can significantly impact ride quality and comfort in a lifted vehicle. Incorrect spring rates, often overlooked by inexperienced shops, can lead to compromised drivability.

Every vehicle and brand has nuances that must be carefully considered. This complexity is why expertise is invaluable. There's no one-size-fits-all answer, and experts like us are here to guide you through the intricacies of choosing the right lift and suspension for your vehicle.

We hope this post brings clarity to some of the complexities involved. Remember, the key to a successful lift is not just achieving height but also maintaining or improving drivability. Reach out to us at Mechanic Near Me for expert advice tailored to your specific needs.
