The best touring upgrades aren't always the ones you can see.

Mark's Prado has 161,072km on the clock and another touring trip ahead of it. Rather than waiting for something to fail while away, Mark wanted to get on top of some important preventative maintenance first.

The Prado came in for:
🔧 New diesel injectors
🔧 New injector lines
🔧 New fuel filters
🔧 Complete intake removal & clean
🔧 Conservative ECU dyno tune

Once we removed the intake, we found significant carbon build up restricting the internal passages. It was stripped down and thoroughly cleaned before everything went back together.

Then we moved onto the tune. Mark wasn't chasing the biggest number we could get out of the Prado. He wanted a conservative tune suited to touring, with reliability remaining the priority.

For us, this is what preparing a touring 4WD should look like.

It's easy to focus on suspension, tyres, roof racks, lights and everything else you can bolt onto a vehicle. But the work you can't see is often what helps get you there and more importantly, gets you home again.

Before asking more from a vehicle, make sure the mechanical foundation is ready for it.

It started with a noise. It ended with a tow truck and major driveline damage.

This vehicle originally came to us for suspension bush replacement. While moving it around the workshop, the wheel bearings were so noisy that we made the decision not to road test the vehicle. We advised that we did not consider it mechanically safe to drive and recommended it wasn't driven until the issue was repaired.

Unfortunately, within days the vehicle was back, this time on a tow truck.

The wheel bearing had completely failed. The wheel and axle dislodged while driving, with the failure causing further damage to the axle and differential.

What started as a wheel bearing repair had now become a much larger job involving major components, harder to source parts and considerably more vehicle downtime.
This is also a family vehicle that is used for towing.

The outcome could have been much worse. Wheel bearings aren't something you normally see, and replacing or repacking them can feel like spending money on a component that is still “working”.

But there's a big difference between a vehicle that can still drive and one that is mechanically safe to drive. If we recommend that you don't continue driving your vehicle, there is a reason behind it.

A hum, rumble, grind or vibration is your vehicle telling you something has changed. Getting it checked early can be the difference between preventative maintenance and a major failure.

Sometimes it really is better the devil you know. 🔧

After his last big trip, Jack felt like his 2011 1KD Prado was out to get him. With 260,000km on the clock, a few original mechanical parts had simply done their hard yards, and the Prado was asking for some maintenance.

Jack originally came to us for lower control arms, camber bolts and a wheel alignment. During our pre-repair road test, our technician noticed that the Prado felt low on power, was slow to build boost and had a loud diesel knock. We also found a split MAP filter, an inoperative parker bulb and a roof-top tent that was not secured correctly.

We replaced the MAP filter and explained the concerns around the original turbo and injectors so Jack could plan and budget. Less than a month later, the engine light came on while he was heading toward Maroochydore. A scan showed a turbo-related fault, matching the symptoms we had already discussed.

Clearing a hard fault is not a repair. Vehicles are not self healing, and continuing to drive with a failing turbo can risk damage beyond the turbocharger itself. The original turbo was removed and replaced before the failure had the chance to become a much bigger problem.

The injectors remain part of Jack's future maintenance plan, but hopefully the Prado will now give him some financial breathing room and keep doing what it was set up to do.

Jack knows this vehicle, its history and its setup. With so many under maintained vehicles being traded in and their problems passed on, maintaining a well known 4WD can be a much smarter choice than buying somebody else's can of worms.

A warning light tells you there’s a problem. It doesn’t always tell you what the problem is. This Jeep came into Power Curve Automotive with the engine light on and an active engine misfire.

Our first step was to scan the ECU and investigate what the vehicle was actually doing rather than simply replacing parts based on the fault code.

During our inspection we found a number of concerns, including:
🔧 Engine misfire fault
🔧 Battery testing at just 256CCA from a rated 640CCA, with 16% state of health
🔧 TPMS warning
🔧 Wiring damage around the fuse box
🔧 Significant play in the steering/front suspension
🔧 Major engine oil leaks and an oil level below the safe operating level
🔧 Spark plugs in poor condition

The spark plugs were removed, inspected and replaced. We then rescanned the ECU. The misfire was still there.

That’s an important part of proper diagnostics, replacing an obviously worn component doesn’t mean you stop looking if the original fault remains.

Our technician continued the investigation, listening to the operation of the injectors and identifying injector #3 as faulty/dead. There was the cause of the ongoing misfire.

With the customer’s approval, we carried out the ECU scan and diagnostic process, replaced the spark plugs and battery, and replaced the failed injector #3.

We believe in finding the cause of a problem and giving our customers clear information about what their vehicle needs, including the other concerns we find along the way.

This 2025 Isuzu DMAX came into Power Curve Automotive for an ECU dyno tune and DPF back exhaust upgrade.

The original exhaust system was removed and replaced with the new DPF back system before the DMAX was placed on our dyno for custom ECU tuning.

Final dyno results:
🔵 171.7 HP and 421.8 Nm
🔴 Standard: 140.1 HP and 338.6 Nm

For many DMAX owners, an ECU tune isn’t about chasing the biggest number possible.

It’s about making the vehicle more responsive and enjoyable to drive particularly when towing, overtaking, travelling with a loaded vehicle or adding accessories that increase its weight.

Improved torque can help the vehicle feel less strained under load, while better throttle response can provide more confidence when accelerating or merging into traffic.

Dyno tuning allows us to measure the vehicle before and after tuning, monitor its performance and make adjustments specifically for that vehicle and how it will be used.

Chris’s 2015 Jaguar XF recently spent a few days with us while he headed away to enjoy a birthday long weekend.

Because Chris follows his 10,000 km or six month service schedule and takes note of the information from each inspection, we were able to plan ahead.

At his previous service, we advised that the front brake pads and rotors would likely be due next time. With limited local availability, the correct parts needed to come from Melbourne, but suitable booking notice meant they were here when the Jaguar arrived.

During this service, we also found a heavy build up of debris in the diesel engine air filter and recommended replacement. The cabin filter was inspected and cleaned but did not require replacing.

That is an important part of our process: inspect first, maintain what remains serviceable and replace components when their condition requires it.

European vehicles can have different wear patterns and parts requirements, but good maintenance does not need to be stressful when there is a clear schedule and forward planning.

This Suzuki Swift came to us with an engine light that remained on and an intermittent loss of power.

Another workshop had already replaced the O₂ sensor and the EGR valve, but neither repair resolved the problem.

By reading the fault codes, analysing the live data from our scan tool and using our technicians’ experience, we traced the problem to a failed catalytic converter.

As shown in the before photo, the internal structure of the converter had broken apart. This was restricting exhaust flow and contributing to the vehicle’s loss of power.

The failed catalytic converter replaced, addressing the cause of the problem.
