🚗 Merging. Do you know who gives way?

This is something that catches a lot of learner drivers out, and plenty of experienced drivers too.

There are two different merging rules in South Australia, and it all comes down to the lane markings.

When your marked lane ends:
You must give way to traffic already travelling in the lane you're moving into.

When two lanes become one with no line separating them:
The vehicle behind gives way to the vehicle in front. This is called zip merging.

Something I always tell my learners is to look at the road markings, not just the other cars. They tell you which rule applies.

And even when another driver is supposed to give way to you, don't assume they will. Give yourself plenty of room.

And just like that, school's back.

Term 4 is the final stretch, and it'll be Christmas before you know it. If you want your P's sorted before the year's out, this is the term to do it.

Why learn with me? There are a few new instructors around lately, which is great, but experience counts when you're teaching someone to drive. I've been doing this for years and have helped plenty of local learners get their P's.

I'm also a professional driver and a qualified mechanic, so you'll learn how to handle the car and understand what's going on under the bonnet. And I'm a dad who's been through the learner years with my own kids, so I know what it's like from the passenger seat too.

I only take on a limited number of learners so each one gets proper attention. I've got a few spots open right now, and they won't last long once the term gets going.

I've taught my own kids to drive, and it's different when it's your kid in the passenger seat.

It also means I know what parents are weighing up when they ring me, because I've been on that side of it.

So here's what I'd want to know about an instructor.
That they can actually drive. Not just hold a licence, but drive for a living and know what the road does when it goes wrong.

That they know the car. I'm a qualified mechanic, so when a learner asks why the car's doing something, they get the real answer, not "don't worry about it."
That they're not rushing it. I only take a handful of lessons a week. If the hour needs to be spent on one roundabout, that's what we do.

That the kid comes home having enjoyed it. Nervous drivers stay nervous. Confident ones get safe.

Car maintenance isn’t just for after you get your licence — it’s part of learning to drive safely.

Bald tyres, low oil, dodgy brakes… these are things that can cause real trouble on the road. That’s why at Learners to Plates, we don’t just focus on passing the test — we make sure you understand how to look after your car, too.

Mark’s a qualified mechanic as well as a driving instructor, and he includes basic car maintenance in all his training sessions. You’ll learn what to look for, what to check, and how to keep your car running safely.

Spring's here and the Hills roads are finally drying out 🌤

If you want to be on your Ps before Christmas, now's the time to get serious about lessons. Better weather means you can focus on your driving instead of fighting fog, glare off wet roads and slippery corners.

I only take on a limited number of sessions each week. That way every learner gets my full attention, and lessons are built around where you're actually at, not a one-size-fits-all checklist.

I'm a professional driver and a qualified mechanic, and I'm also a dad who's been through the learner ye ars as a parent, so I understand it from the family side too.

We'll cover everything you need for your VORT, including the stuff that trips people up around here: hill starts, Mount Barker's roundabouts and narrow country roads. Along the way you'll pick up a bit of what's going on under the bonnet too.

Spots are limited and end-of-year test bookings fill up fast, so don't leave it too late.
