71-Rat HG Holden Ute build

71-Rat HG Holden Ute build This page is dedicated to showing the build process of my 71-RAT HG Holden Ute build. I grew up driving these cars when I was younger, the HK, HT & HG's. R.I.P.

The build started at Sydney's Outkast Garage and then has been completely redone at Southern Customs in Pakenham, Victoria. I have never owned a V8, nor have I ever owned a ute. So a few years back while talking to my wife about giving myself a "present", she asked me what I wanted. I thought about it for a while and remembered a close friend telling me, don't wait for things to happen, make them

happen and take some time for yourself. Enjoy life and stop putting everyone else first. I was working two jobs, coaching football and various family issues no one wants to read about. This is where the idea for the Rat inspired ute came from. I absolutely love the look of Rat Rods but for a daily driver I wanted something a little more user friendly, so I figured a HK,T,G series Holden would be a good start. I then came across two guys making a HT Holden ute. Andy & Sean were having fun, building cars and driving them. They had been around them all their lives and so had their families. The cool thing about these two guys is they created Outkast Garage, extended from their car club made up of mates. Their style stood out and I loved what they were creating. They are two of the most genuine guys I have had the pleasure meeting, down to earth and you get the feeling they would give you their last dollar if you needed it. I had no space or time to do up a car at that very moment, so I made contact and told them what I wanted. After a few messages and phone calls we agreed, Outkast Garage would have to build me the most unique ute out there. It needed attitude, it needed comfort, it needed grunt and it needed to be loud. Throughout the build there has been many hands helping this car get to where it is today. Some flying in from interstate even and I cannot thank them enough. This car means more to me than nuts and bolts, it's a promise to a friend to have some fun. mate ;)

It's been a while between updates.

A few suspension issues to be rectified and then COVID hit.

I have the parts needed now, so it was time to wake the beast up after a long sleep.

The warmer weather is here now, that means more cruising time 👍

The 71-RAT ute was at the Melbourne F1 GP over the weekend.

I was competing in a BBQ competition and had to get in a heap of BBQ gear. So loaded up the ute.

Last weekend we travelled nearly 2,000km’s from Melbourne to the top of South Australia and then down to Adelaide and back.

It’s the longest drive the 71-RAT has been on and it didn’t miss a beat.

I competed at Meatstock BBQ Competition in Melbourne this year. I was also asked to exhibit my ute and a small part of my Weber collection next to the main stage.

So pulled over tonight and given a defect.

Engine leaks, they looked under the bonnet. There is no oil but it’s dirty.

Clearance issues, they stated it has to be 100mm. It sits 114mm.

Told the suspension isn’t legal, it was done professionally and passed both RWC & going over the pits.

This is a write up that was done on the 71-RAT ute last year.

This was after delivery and in the process of Murray from Southern Customs going right through the build and effectively rebuilding it again.

It's still a great story from John Schommer at Turn 10 Studios, the makers of the Forza Motorsport franchise. This write up was done in conjunction of Forza Horizons 3 coming out that was based in Australia.

PS: yes in the video I know I refer to Clint Eastwood as Clintwood, I proved to myself people can't drive and talk without loosing some part of your focus.

Also when this write up was done, I was asked the particulars on the build, Outkast Garage told me it had a 327 in it, it is inf act the casting number on the block and in fact it has a 350 in it.
